Conservative Andrew Turner has had questions raised over his health and difficulties with his campaign - his electoral agent was replaced ten days before polling day. Mr Turner has been the island's MP since 2001 and won 46.7% of the vote in 2010.

Will he keep his seat against strong Lib Deb, UKIP, Green and Labour campaigns?

The Lib Dems have been fighting to hold two key seats in the South - Eastleigh and Dorset Mid and Poole North. In Eastleigh Mike Thornton held on to the seat in a by-election after the resignation of disgraced cabinet minister Chris Huhne. The Lib Dems were run close by UKIP who will be hoping to go one better this time around.

In a stream of Conservative safe seats - Horsham, Fareham, North-East Hampshire, Banbury, North Dorset - it's likely a new MP has already been chosen before a ballot has been cast.

BBC South's Political Editor Peter Henley looked at the issue of these safe seats.

Among the South's early declarations, we're expecting a result at Eastleigh at about 02:30 BST.

The Hampshire constituency was won by Lib Dem Chris Huhne at the last general election, but a by-election followed his resignation after his prosecution for passing speeding points to his ex-wife.

UKIP came a close second to Lib Dem Mike Thornton in the by-election.

A declaration at Oxford East could be at around 01:30.

It's got one of the highest proportions of student voters. Labour's Andrew Smith won the seat in 2010, beating the Lib Dems by 4,581 votes.
