  1. 'Democratic revolution'published at 09:36 British Summer Time 8 May 2015

    Douglas Fraser
    BBC Scotland

"A democratic revolution has taken place and there are challenges for the winners and the losers.

"The winners have to define what this means and I think we've heard today from the First Minister they are still struggling to express that in the context of a Conservative majority government.

"But clearly for the losers this is such a sharp jolt that they can't avoid but take a really serious look at themselves. They can't afford to do what the Conservatives did which is take the best part of two decades to try to turn themselves around.

"Labour just has to start from scratch again in Scotland. This has been a long time coming. Society has changed and they need to address that too. And the same goes for the Liberal Democrats - they have been a big player in rural Scotland for a long time."

    BBC Scotland News

Nicola Sturgeon told BBC Scotland: "I think Scotland has voted for change, has very clearly voted against continued austerity. These are the issues we put at the heart of the campaign.

"It's not the scenario I wanted. I don't think I could have made it clearer that I wanted to see the back of David Cameron and a Conservative government but Labour hasn't managed to beat the Conservatives in England.

    Screen grab - Nicola Sturgeon

"But given that we are facing, unfortunately, another Conservative government, it is all the more important in my view that we've got a strong team of SNP MPs standing up for Scotland."

Ms Sturgeon said it was not a mandate for independence but for further devolution to help end austerity in Scotland.

    Douglas Fraser
    BBC Scotland

"The Tories vacated some of the social liberal centre ground because they were so worried about UKIP. Now things have obviously turned around south of the Border.

"With UKIP I don't know that they'll ever be quite the same threat [to the Conservatives] again.

"They have got 9% of the vote but nevertheless hardly any seats.

"They may push through in European elections but given their best opportunity was at a Westminster electio,n they really haven't pushed through and the Tories may be much less concerned about them in future."

But it is the problem of government rather than the problem of opposition."

  10. George Osbornepublished at 08:59 British Summer Time 8 May 2015

    BBC Radio Scotland

I profoundly disagree with what Scottish nationalists want to achieve in terms of the independence of their country or the break-up of the UK.

And, by the way, that was rejected in the referendum by the people of Scotland themselves.

But, we need to respect that result in Scotland in this general election and see what we can do to make the people of Scotland feel part of a strong United Kingdom.
