  3. 'Remarkable swing'published at 05:52 British Summer Time 6 May 2016

While Plaid Cymru held Rhondda once before at an assembly election, winning the seat in the inaugural elections in 1999, it returned to the Labour fold in 2003 and was won by the Welsh Government minister, Leighton Andrews by a margin of 33.6% at the 2011 election.

As a result, when Leanne Wood announced her decision to contest the seat, many observers expected she would reduce Labour's majority rather than supplant the party entirely.

Needing a swing of 16.85% to win this seat, the Plaid Cymru leader has instead achieved a remarkable 24% swing, a majority of 3,459 and one of the most famous victories recorded at an assembly election.

Conservative cabinet minister Chris Grayling tells BBC News: "The story of tonight is the erosion of the foundations of the Labour Party.

"It has been almost decimated in Scotland, it is now losing core areas of Wales. Labour losing the Rhondda is a huge blow to that party.

"We are seeing Labour lose its foundations because it has become utterly out of touch with the public as a whole."

  14. 'Terrible shock'published at 05:27 British Summer Time 6 May 2016

Former Labour cabinet minister Peter Hain said the loss of Rhondda to Plaid Cymru's Leanne Wood was "a terrible shock for us in Welsh Labour".

Lord Hain said the defeat of Leighton Andrews was "a huge loss for Welsh politics" and would "solidify" Ms Wood's position as Plaid leader.

But he said the Welsh Labour vote was "holding strong overall" and predicted the party would hold Llanelli.

Leanne Wood says "everything is on the table" in terms of forming the next government.

She told BBC Wales: "I'm not a tribal politician and I certainly don't take much notice of personalities in politics.

"Wales will only progress when we have a change of government.

"We don't know how much of a role Plaid Cymru will be able to have in the next government. Everything is on the table."
