  8. Awkward handshakespublished at 15:59 British Summer Time 28 May 2017

    HandshakesImage source, Reuters

French President Emmanuel Macron says his clenched handshake with Donald Trump ahead of a Nato summit in Brussels was "not innocent".

The two presidents gripped each other's hands in a firm handshake when meeting for the first time - with Mr Macron clinging on when Mr Trump tried to let go.

Mr Macron told French media that he wanted to show that France would not make small concessions - not even symbolic ones.

"Donald Trump, the Turkish president or the Russian president see things in terms of power relationships," he said.

"I don't believe in diplomacy through public criticism but in my bilateral dialogues I don't let anything pass. That is how you get respect."

But another encounter from later in the day shows Mr Macron greeting German Chancellor Angela Merkel before making his way over to the US president, who seems, on this occasion, to get the upper hand, as it were.

  12. Speaking of vote share, here's the BBC's Poll Trackerpublished at 14:54 British Summer Time 28 May 2017

    the BBC Poll tracker

Our poll tracker brings you all the latest updates from senior elections and political analyst Peter Barnes.

Here's what he had to say last night:

Five polls have been published this evening. Overall, they reinforce Thursday night's polls which suggested that the Conservative lead over Labour has shrunk again since last weekend but there are quite large differences between the pollsters' figures.

ICM and ComRes have a larger gap between the two main parties than the other companies. They put it at 14% and 12% respectively but that's still down from what they were showing two weeks ago. The others have it at 6%-10%.

There will no doubt be some talk about the fact that Labour has dropped two points in YouGov's poll compared to the one they published on Thursday. But that still means that the gap is narrower than they found last weekend and it would be unwise to read too much into a small change between two individual polls.

The general trend is clear. The Conservatives are still ahead but Labour has closed the gap.

  16. 'Perfectly reasonable' for Corbyn to discuss UK foreign policy - Peter Hitchenspublished at 14:29 British Summer Time 28 May 2017

    The World This Weekend
    Radio 4 programme

Mail on Sunday columnist Peter Hitchens says it was "perfectly reasonable" for Jeremy Corbyn to discuss the UK's foreign policy in light of the Manchester terror attack.

Speaking on BBC Radio 4's The World This Weekend, Mr Hitchens said: "It's a position many find credible. I don't think it's going to do Corbyn any particular harm.

"What interests me is how the government is going to change the election back onto the area where I think they feel they can win - the economy and the issue over the EU."
