  12. Good night for the DUP and Sinn Feinpublished at 04:06 British Summer Time 9 June 2017

    Chris Page
    BBC News NI Political Correspondent

It's been an extraordinarily good night for the two biggest parties, the DUP and Sinn Fein.

It's been a disastrous result for the SDLP who lost all three of their seats, and the best ever for DUP, who are in a strong position regarding what happens after in terms of the Westminster Parliament.

They see it as increasing their hand in negotiations on devolution as well.

Sinn Fein has been very clear its MPs won't take their seats regardless of the arithmetic, as all their candidates stood on abstentionist tickets.

Lib Dem Sir Vince Cable, who's won in Twickenham, says his party is "doing well in London and in Scotland, we're looking at a significant increase in our parliamentary party".

"We're very clear on the big picture, that we won't take part in any coalition but we want to be constructive.

"Parties are going to have to work together not shout at each other."

In the new Parliament he thinks it will be "possible to pursue a Brexit which retains single market" and Theresa May's vision of what he calls "extreme Brexit" is "simply no longer an option".

    Nicola Sturgeon

Scotland's First Minister Nicola Sturgeon says the SNP "has won the election in Scotland", but she is disappointed her deputy Angus Robertson has lost his seat.

She adds that the election has been "a disaster" for Theresa May, and she hopes the SNP can play a part in a progressive alliance that is an alternative to the Tories.
