  1. Labour tapped into concerns - Barwellpublished at 19:02 British Summer Time 12 June 2017

Theresa May's new chief of staff Gavin Barwell says Labour "tapped into" concerns about the impact of years of public sector pay freezes and many Remain voters also turned to Labour.

Speaking on BBC Panorama, to be broadcast later, he said: "The real thing we need to understand is how did the Labour Party get 40% of the vote.

"How were they successful in motivating large numbers of people who don't normally vote, to vote for them, and what can we do to make sure that people that are Conservative-minded, that voted Remain in the referendum, are happy to continue supporting our party.

"We need to look into those two effects - the higher turnout and the evidence that in strong Remain areas Labour did particularly well."
