"It shows a fatal contempt for parliamentary opinion," he writes.

    George Freeman, Mid Norfolk MP

Mr Freeman calls for the new government to set out "a positive offer" for public service reform and to do more to appeal to people under the age of 30, many of whom are thought to have voted in large numbers for Labour.

"We need to show fast that we have listened to the British public," he said.

Mr Freeman also attacked plans for a so-called hard Brexit, arguing that it's not what the public voted for.

  20. What will the DUP try to achieve?published at 10:05 British Summer Time 12 June 2017

DUP leader Arlene Foster says the general election result has caused a "political earthquake" which has left her party in a position of influence it had not expected to be in.

Writing in the Belfast Telegraph, external, she says the DUP will use that position responsibly to achieve the policies it set out in its election campaign - strengthening the union, working for a good deal for Northern Ireland as the United Kingdom leaves the EU and getting the Stormont assembly back up and running.

Mrs Foster says: "When I meet with the prime minister in London tomorrow, I will be mindful of our responsibility to help bring stability to the nation at this time of challenge. We will be working to agree arrangements that can provide the whole nation with good government."

She adds that some of the commentary and analysis about her party over recent days has been "inaccurate and misleading" and says: "I have no doubt over time those responsible will look foolish in the extreme."
