  5. Potential DUP deal 'will be difficult'published at 12:19 British Summer Time 12 June 2017

    Norman Smith
    Assistant political editor

The government has yet to nail down this deal with the DUP and they will be very wary of presenting a Queen's Speech unless they are absolutely confident they can get it through - because if they can’t and they are defeated on the Queen’s speech, that is tantamount to a vote of no confidence.

So obviously they have to nail down this deal with the DUP before they say "right we are going to go for the Queen’s Speech".

So they are keeping their options open there.

But the deal with the DUP is going to be difficult.

Not just because we’ve already seen figures like Ruth Davidson expressing concerns about the attitude of the DUP on some social policy areas, but also because of the impact it could potentially have on Northern Ireland politics if the government is seen to be backing one side, ie the DUP, when of course they will have to reach a deal with Sinn Fein.

The real concern is the deal at Westminster could jeopardise the future of power sharing in Northern Ireland.

So this is really very, very high-stakes stuff.

Don't be fooled out of seeing the big picture. This is not politics as normal.

The carefully constructed house of cards has been swept away. It is politics more chaotic, more brutal than any thriller.

The Conservative Party has a reputation for ruthlessness - getting rid of even much loved leaders when they are no longer a tool to maintaining the party's rule.

The defenestration of their idol Margaret Thatcher was a sign of that.

But this is far more cruel, a breathtakingly savage lesson in the exercise of power.

Mrs May has been broken on the electoral wheel but is forced to stand on splintered limbs, grimacing through the pain, for the sake of her party's chance to cling to office.

The spokesman also said there had been no change in the government's position on Brexit, which was still that set out in the letter triggering Article 50.

    John BercowImage source, PA

Will there be a serious attempt to stop John Bercow resuming the chair of the Commons, now he has indicated he could seek to continue through the full length of the new Parliament?

Back in February, five Conservatives signed an early day motion of no confidence, but the attempt to unseat him fizzled out.

Even so, my guess is that the anti-Bercow camp will not be able to resist, if only to make the point that not everyone in the House supports him.

    Westminster Hour
    Radio 4's Westminster Hour

The Conservative backbench 1922 Committee is meeting this afternoon - 24 hours earlier than originally planned.

Speaking to the Westminster Hour’s Carolyn Quinn, chairman Graham Brady said it would give the prime minister an opportunity to discuss the proposed confidence and supply arrangement with the DUP with party colleagues, before actually signing any agreement.

He also doubted a leadership election would be called soon, saying colleagues recognised the public "might look askance at the Conservative Party suddenly engaging in yet another bout of internal politics".
