  4. Queen's Speech delayed by... goat-skin?published at 13:38 British Summer Time 12 June 2017

We understand one of the reasons given for the Queen's Speech being delayed is that it has to be written on goat-skin - and that takes a week to process, because it has to be hung up to dry.

The new Queen's Speech will have to be agreed with the DUP - hence the delay. The goatskin complication was explained by Nick Robinson here, writing back in 2013.

  5. Gardiner: Labour is committed to leaving single marketpublished at 13:31 British Summer Time 12 June 2017

    The Daily Politics

Shadow International Trade Secretary Barry Gardiner has stressed that Labour is committed to leaving the single market.

It comes after Mr Gardiner appeared to suggest on the Today programme this morning that it might be possible to retain single market membership.

    Here's what he told Today:

    Quote Message

We need those benefits and whether they are achieved through reformed membership of the single market and the customs union or through a new bespoke trading arrangement is actually secondary to achieving the benefits, it's an open question as to what we can get."

Asked later on the Daily Politics if Labour were committed to leaving the single market, he said:

    Quote Message

Yes. Because it’s absolutely clear that the single market is actually the internal market of the European Union. If we leave the European Union, which we are committed to doing, we leave the internal market, and with that we can’t have a deal where there is a single market, or internal market, without the four freedoms [free movement of goods, capital, services, and labour]."

  6. Tories have 'no instinct' for another election says Norman Lambpublished at 13:21 British Summer Time 12 June 2017

The Liberal Democrat MP, Norman Lamb, who retained his seat in North Norfolk last week, says the Conservatives will not want the country to go to the polls again.

His constituency was targetted by the Conservatives' James Wild, but Mr Lamb held the seat with a 10% increase in his vote.

Mr Lamb hugging his wife, when election result is called

Mr Lamb says when the Tories called the general election they were totally convinced they would emerge with a massively increased majority, but squandered a 21% opinion poll lead.

    Quote Message

Whether it's Theresa May or some other leader in a few months time, they will be thinking 'if we go to the country we could lose power altogether', so I'm not at all sure there'll be any instinct on the Tory side to do that."

  15. Queen's Speech: What is it and why is it important?published at 12:56 British Summer Time 12 June 2017

  16. UK government 'will be weak' entering Brexit negotiationspublished at 12:42 British Summer Time 12 June 2017

German MEP Elmar Brok - a close ally of chancellor Angela Merkel - says Brexit talks need to start.

He tells the BBC Germany would have preferred a government with a broad majority, able to make compromises - rather than "hardliners on the British side who can stop such comprises.

    Quote Message

These things will essentially become much more difficult because such a weak government has no real possibilities for the needed common flexibility you need in every negotiation. So I'm surprised how weak Britain does go into these negotiations now and perhaps we should think again and make the best choice out of that in order to keep the damage down in the interest of our people."

The new Fine Gael leader in Ireland, Leo Varadkar, has said he will raise with Theresa May the importance of impartiality in the Stormont talks.

He said it's important that the two governments, as co-guarantors of the Good Friday Agreement, should not be too close to either unionism or nationalists and republicans.

Mr Varadkar is expected to become Taoiseach later this week in a Dail vote on Enda Kenny's successor.
