    The Conservative Party did not have any option but to go with the DUP as “no other party will deal with them” said George Osborne.

    He said the situation was different in 2010, when he helped negotiate a Tory-Lib Dem coalition.

    But, he added, the Northern Ireland party could pull its support at any time: “It’s a very unstable arrangement.”

    Theresa May's position as Prime Minister is under scrutiny and under threat, according to some of the Sunday papers.

    'In office, but not in power,' reads the headline in the Sunday Telegraph, external, highlighting Mrs May's "fragile leadership" and the Tory "jostle in [the] unofficial race to replace her".

    'May's premiership in peril,' writes the Observer, external, adding that an "isolated" Theresa May was forced to rule out a formal pact with the Democratic Unionists amid threats of a "rebellion by Tory MPs".

    'Five cabinet ministers urge Boris to topple May' reports the Sunday Times., external The paper claims five ministers "pledged their loyalty" to Mr Johnson on Friday.

    But the Sunday Express, external claims Theresa May is "already fighting back and defying her critics" after her joint chiefs of staff Nick Timothy and Fiona Hill resigned "in disgrace".

    Alastair Campbell, former director of communications for Tony Blair, says Prime Minister Theresa May is "playing with fire" by holding talks with the Democratic Unionist Party.

    Speaking on BBC Breakfast, Mr Campbell said: "Theresa May has no idea what she's playing with here.

    "When the peace process is in trouble, as it is at the moment, the British and Irish governments are the mediators between the unionists and the nationalists.

    "How can they be the mediator when the unionists are now being brought into government? They have not thought this through, and that is playing with fire."

    And on the sacking of the PM's two closest aides, Nick Timothy and Fiona Hill, Mr Campbell said: "If she thinks that getting rid of two people that most of the public hasn't heard of is going to save her, she's living in la-la land."

    Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson has denied claims in the Mail on Sunday, external that he is "preparing a new bid to become Prime Minister".

    The Mail quotes "a close ally" of Mr Johnson as saying: "We need Bojo. We need a Brexiteer. We need somebody who can talk and connect with people like Jeremy Corbyn. We need someone who can make Britain believe in itself again."

    But in a tweet, Mr Johnson called the allegation "Mail on Sunday tripe".

    The paper also reports that Brexit Secretary David Davis, a favourite for the post of Deputy Prime Minister, is "widely believed to be considering a run at the leadership if there is a contest".

    A survey for the Mail on Sunday had 49% of people saying Theresa May should quit as Prime Minister, with 26% favouring Mr Johnson to replace her. A YouGov poll for the Sunday Times suggested 48% thought Mrs May should stand down.

    "I can still be prime minister. This is still on, " Jeremy Corbyn told the Sunday Mirror, external, in an exclusive interview.

    Mr Corbyn said he intends to try and vote down the Queen's Speech, which will set out Theresa May's programme for government.

    "I don’t think Theresa May and this government have any credibility," said Mr Corbyn, who plans to appoint a shadow cabinet over the next couple of days.

    "We’ve got the biggest increase in the Labour vote between elections since the Second World War – we put on more than three million votes," he added, citing "people coming back to Labour who had gone away a long time ago".

    "There is a new movement in Britain demanding social change and the millions who voted for the Labour Party cannot and should not be denied.

    "The Tories may be in government for now, but their model and lack of ambition is unsustainable. I’m ready for another general election."
