  3. Analysis: Corbyn or Brexit to blame for Labour losses?published at 00:46 Greenwich Mean Time 13 December 2019

At the election count in Jeremy Corbyn's constituency of Islington North

    Nick Robinson
    Presenter, Radio 4 Today

Everybody here is simply waiting to see when the Labour leader arrives. We're not expecting him for a couple of hours yet though.

When he's (very likely) re-elected, what will he say in his speech?

I don't think it's likely that he'll stand down today, but it's very likely that he'll do it in the days to come.

And the expectation from both the left and the right of the Labour Party is that within days John McDonnell will be acting leader (in the absence of the elected deputy leader Tom Watson, who decided not to stand for re-election).

Mr McDonnell could then delay the formal leadership for, potentially, months, in the hope that strong candidates can come through and gather support.

We're seeing a battle of blame already - do you blame Brexit for Labour's woes, or do you blame Mr Corbyn?

That's the row that's now taking place.

  4. Ones to watch: Kirkcaldy and Cowdenbeathpublished at 00:44 Greenwich Mean Time 13 December 2019

    Kirkcaldy and Cowdenbeath stats

SNP members were warned against campaigning for the party's former candidate in a key marginal seat, by First Minister Nicola Sturgeon.

Neale Hanvey was suspended as the SNP's candidate in Kirkcaldy and Cowdenbeath after accepting that he had used anti-Semitic language on social media.

Mr Hanvey would still appeared on the ballot paper next to the party's name as his suspension came too late for any changes to be made, but if elected he would initially sit as an independent MP.

Prior to this it was seen as a potentially wobbly seat for Shadow Scottish Secretary Lesley Laird.

She hasa majority of only 259 votes in her Fife constituency, which is another one which Labour reclaimed in 2017 despite actually losing votes.

If Labour have heartlands in Scotland any more, this should be one of them - the seat was formerly held with a majority of over 50% by Prime Minister Gordon Brown.

The party's goal is now to get Jeremy Corbyn into Downing Street - and seats like this will tell us a lot about whether that message has cut through in Scotland.

  6. Greens 'have run a very positive campaign'published at 00:40 Greenwich Mean Time 13 December 2019

Alison Johnstone, MSP for the Lothian region and former co-convener of the Scottish Greens, says the Green Party has "run a very positive campaign".

"It’s really important the young people who’ve been protesting at the [climate change] rallies know they’re being taken seriously," she added. "Tackling the climate emergency is more important than Brexit or indyref2. We can’t keep putting it down the pecking order.”

  9. Large turnout in East Dunbartonshirepublished at 00:34 Greenwich Mean Time 13 December 2019

    80.3% turnout in East Dunbartonshire.

Lib Dem leader Jo Swinson won the seat in 2017. It had the biggest turnout in Scotland in 2017 and it is higher this time.

There’s talk of Jo Swinson’s vote being on a “knife-edge”.

The SNP may be looking at taking the seat again like in 2015.

  10. 'We've let the country down' - Labour's Murraypublished at 00:33 Greenwich Mean Time 13 December 2019

Edinburgh South MP Ian Murray, who had the biggest majority in Scotland in 2017 with over 15,000, appears to be facing a fight with the SNP to hold onto his seat.

Mr Murray appears to be suggesting Jeremy Corbyn has proved a divisive figure with voters and his party have "let the country down".

    Professor Sir John Curtice

We should note that so far the turnout is down overall by 2 points, suggesting that neither expectations that Brexit would bring more voters to the polls nor those that Christmas would drive them away have proven to be correct.

Polls closed over two hours ago, so where are we now:

    • The Conservatives are set to win an overall majority of 86 in the general election, according to an exit poll for the BBC, ITV and Sky News.
    • The exit poll predicts a very good night for the SNP - forecasting victory in 55 seats - but there's less certainty about that forecast
    • It appears to bring very bad news for Labour, with the worst result for them for many decades forecast

  19. Tories: Brexit bill could be back next Fridaypublished at 00:13 Greenwich Mean Time 13 December 2019

Downing Street says if the exit poll numbers are correct, there will be a minor reshuffle of necessary appointments only on Monday.

The Withdrawal Agreement Bill - Boris Johnson's Brexit plan - would then have its second reading on Friday 20 December.

A major reshuffle would take place in February, after the UK has left the EU on the deadline of 31 January.

There would be a Budget statement in March.

    Green MSP Ross Greer

Scottish Green MSP Ross Greer says this is a terrible night if you live in poverty, for the planet, if you are disabled or a refugee.

Mr Greer says his frustration is the Greens will probably double their vote but the odds are there won't be more than the one MP returned for the party in Brighton.

This is a fundamentally broken electoral system, he says, adding the SNP and the Greens across the UK are going to get about the same share of the vote, yet the SNP look like they'll get 55 seats and the Greens will get one.
