Neil Hanvey, who started the campaign as an SNP candidate for Kirkcaldy and Cowdenbeath, but was suspended after accepting that he had used anti-Semitic language, is still hopeful of winning the seat.
SNP members were warned against campaigning for the party's former candidate in a key marginal seat, by First Minister Nicola Sturgeon.
Mr Hanvey still appeared on the ballot paper next to the party's name as his suspension came too late for any changes to be made, but if elected he would initially sit as an independent MP.
Prior to this it was seen as a potentially wobbly seat for Labour Shadow Scottish Secretary Lesley Laird.

It’s worth taking a moment to remember what this result will mean.
A Tory majority will mean Brexit happens - and that the UK will almost certainly leave the EU next month.
Boris Johnson will have a lot more power to get a future trade deal through Parliament too. He won’t have to rely on the European Research Group (ERG) Brexiteer group as much - if he so chooses.
It’s less clear what will happen with the Labour Party.
This looks like it could be a thumping loss for Jeremy Corbyn and his allies. Some are making clear already that they want a change of direction - others will fight that tooth and nail.
Conservative candidate Angus Forbes is eager to wrest Perth & North Perthshire, an SNP seat since 2005, from the nationalists.
Pete Wishart, who has been MP here for all 14 of those years, won by just 21 votes in 2017.

This long-standing Labour seat was seized by the SNP in 2015, only to turn red again in 2017.
BBC Scotland reporter Catriona Renton says the SNP are confident of winning this seat back.
The interesting thing about the 2017 election was that Labour managed to regain the seat despite losing votes compared to their previous performance. It was just that they only lost 1,000 votes, while the SNP lost 11,000.
With Ged Killen defending a majority of just 265 votes - 0.5% - there will be a keen contest for the seat again this time around, with a rematch between him and his SNP predecessor Margaret Ferrier.
In a country of three-way marginals, this was one of the more two-horse races in 2017, with Labour and the SNP accounting for 75% of the vote between them. The result could tell us a lot about how both parties are performing overall in Scotland.
