  12. Counts under way across Walespublished at 23:17 Greenwich Mean Time 12 December 2019

Plenty of crosses into the box at the Cardiff City Stadium tonight... but not the kind you would see from Neil Harris's team.

The stadium in the south west of Cardiff is hosting the counts for the Cardiff West and Cardiff North constituencies this evening.

Boxes have also arrived in Newbridge for the Islwyn count.

Islwyn had one of the lowest turnouts in Wales in the last general election at 64.2%, but there are suggestions they might beating that figure this time.

  15. Jeremy Corbyn "has led a fantastic campaign"published at 23:07 Greenwich Mean Time 12 December 2019

Labour’s Shadow Welsh Secretary Christina Rees said if the exit poll was correct it would “be a bad night for us”.

She said it was “always going to be very challenging in difficult weather for us to get to see and have as many conversations as we could, but we’ve certainly run a very good campaign in Wales”.

Ms Rees said a pre-election poll had predicted Labour losing nine seats in Wales, but “I think we are in a better position than that today," she said.

Asked about Jeremy Corbyn’s future as leader, Ms Rees gave him her support and said: “Jeremy Corbyn is our leader, he’s led a fantastic campaign. He’s been all over the UK, and he’s been to Wales several times”.

  16. "A bad night" for the Labour partypublished at 23:03 Greenwich Mean Time 12 December 2019

Labour is forecast to take an estimated 191 seats across the UK, down 71, which would be its worst performance at a general election in terms of seats since 1935.

Vaughan Gething, the Welsh Government Labour health minister, said if the exit poll was borne out it would be a "bad night for the Labour party" and "a bad night for the country".

"We did understand that traditional Labour voters, older Labour voters, had a real issue voting Labour in this election," he said.

Paul Davies, the Conservative leader in the Welsh Assembly, told BBC Wales’ Election 2019 programme: “People want to see Brexit delivered and that’s why they have come out to vote for us if this poll is correct."

Prof Laura McAllister, speaking on the BBC Wales Election 2019 programme, said: “There’s irony here if these results do play out.

"Labour might be looking at having the bulk of its MPs in the south Wales valleys – the part of Wales which is most resistant to Jeremy Corbyn.

"It will be interesting how that plays out for the First Minister, Mark Drakeford, who is himself a supporter of Jeremy Corbyn”.
