Hastings & Rye: Conservatives hold Amber Rudd's former seatpublished at 07:11 Greenwich Mean Time 13 December 2019
Sally-Ann Hart has been elected MP for Hastings & Rye, meaning that the Conservative Party holds the seat with an increased majority.
The new MP beat Labour's Peter Chowney by 4,043 votes. This was considerably more than Amber Rudd’s 346 vote majority in the 2017 general election.
Amber Rudd did not stand for re-election. She is a former Conservative Home Secretary, who resigned the party whip in September and became an independent MP.
Nick Perry of the Liberal Democrats came third and independent candidate Paul Crosland came fourth.
Voter turnout was down by 2.5 percentage points since the last general election.
More than 54,000 people, roughly two-thirds of those eligible to vote, went to polling stations across the area on Thursday, in the first December general election since 1923.
One of the four candidates, Paul Crosland (independent) lost his £500 deposit after failing to win 5% of the vote.
