  1. Hastings & Rye: Conservatives hold Amber Rudd's former seatpublished at 07:11 Greenwich Mean Time 13 December 2019

    Sally-Ann Hart has been elected MP for Hastings & Rye, meaning that the Conservative Party holds the seat with an increased majority.

    The new MP beat Labour's Peter Chowney by 4,043 votes. This was considerably more than Amber Rudd’s 346 vote majority in the 2017 general election.

    Amber Rudd did not stand for re-election. She is a former Conservative Home Secretary, who resigned the party whip in September and became an independent MP.

    Nick Perry of the Liberal Democrats came third and independent candidate Paul Crosland came fourth.

    Voter turnout was down by 2.5 percentage points since the last general election.

    More than 54,000 people, roughly two-thirds of those eligible to vote, went to polling stations across the area on Thursday, in the first December general election since 1923.

    Caroline Lucas has been re-elected as the MP for Brighton Pavilion, with an increased majority.

    The Green's only UK MP beat Labour's Adam Imanpour by 19,940 votes, 5,241 more votes than the majority at the 2017 election.

    Emma Hogan of the Conservative Party came third and the Brexit Party's Richard Milton came fourth.

    Voter turnout was down by 3.1 percentage points since the last general election.

    Nearly 58,000 people, roughly three-quarters of those eligible to vote, went to polling stations across the area on Thursday, in the first December general election since 1923.

    I asked new Hastings Tory MP Sally-Ann Hart about the party’s investigations into allegations of anti-Semitism and Islamophobia over articles she shared in 2017.

    She said: “These allegations are tenuous and I will wait to see what the party comes up with before making any comment.”

    In her acceptance speech she said: “I pledge to represent all of the people of Hastings regardless of their political views. We need to face the future with optimism. Today we all need to come together.”

    He said there had been a political earthquake and that the Tories had won a "stonking" mandate, with seats secured everywhere from Kensington to Clwyd South.
