    Like its coastal neighbour Eastbourne, this Sussex town will be one of the key battlegrounds between the Conservatives and the Liberal Democrats.

    It’s currently in blue hands, with Maria Caulfield taking it from former Coalition minister Norman Baker in 2015, and then holding it in 2017 with a majority of 5,508.

    It’s tenth on the Lib Dems list of target seats, and the party’s candidate Oli Henman will be hoping to cash in on pro-European feeling, with Lewes voting 52.9% remain in 2016.

    Maria Caulfield is a Brexiteer, who resigned her party role as vice-chair for women over Theresa May’s Chequers proposal.

    Laura Trott, a former adviser to David Cameron, takes over from the retiring Sir Michael Fallon as MP for Sevenoaks, with a slightly decreased majority.

    Damian Collins has been re-elected as the MP for Folkestone & Hythe, with an increased majority.

    The Conservative candidate beat Labour's Laura Davison by 21,337 votes, 5,926 more votes than the majority at the 2017 election.

    Simon Bishop of the Liberal Democrats came third and the Green Party's Georgina Treloar came fourth.

    Voter turnout was down by 1.4 percentage points since the last general election.

    More than 59,000 people, roughly two-thirds of those eligible to vote, went to polling stations across the area on Thursday, in the first December general election since 1923.

    Five of the eight candidates lost their £500 deposits after failing to win 5% of the vote.

    Rosie Duffield has been re-elected as the MP for Canterbury, increasing her very slim majority.

    The Labour candidate beat Conservative Anna Firth by 1,836 votes, compared to her 2017 winning margin of only 187.

    Claire Malcomson of the Liberal Democrats came third and independent candidate Michael Gould came fourth.

    Voter turnout was up by 2.3 percentage points since the last general election.

    More than 60,000 people, exactly three-quarters of those eligible to vote, went to polling stations across the area on Thursday, in the first December general election since 1923.
