    "You can't buy happiness - but you can vote for it," said Andrew Bridgen after he was named as the winner of the North West Leicestershire constituency.

    He was speaking about the area topping a recent happiness poll for the East Midlands.

    The MP, who received a majority of 20,400 in the polls, said the constituency was a "very different" seat to the one he was first elected to in 2010.

    "It was considered the most deprived seat in Leicestershire," he said.

    As well as topping happiness polls he said the area was now recognised for its economic prosperity.

    Nadia Whittome is the new MP in Nottingham East, replacing Chris Leslie, who defected from Labour in February.

    She could also gain the accolade of being the youngest MP in this Parliament, also known as baby of the House, at the tender age of 23.

    Ms Whittome enjoyed a large majority, getting 25,735 votes or 64% of the vote.

    Mr Leslie managed just 1,147 votes.

    Coincidentally, Chris Leslie was also baby of the house when he was first elected as MP in Shipley, West Yorkshire in 1997 aged 24.

    Dr Luke Evans is celebrating becoming the new Conservative MP in Bosworth with a glass of bubbly.

    He received 36,056 votes to be elected with an increased majority of 26,278.

    The GP has taken over from David Tredinnick who stepped down last month after being the MP since 1987.

    Nadia Whittome has been elected MP for Nottingham East, meaning that the Labour Party holds the seat with a decreased majority.

    The new MP beat Conservative Victoria Stapleton by 17,393 votes. This was fewer than Chris Leslie’s 19,590 vote majority in the 2017 general election.

    Robert Swift of the Liberal Democrats came third and Chris Leslie, who stood for the Independent Group for Change, came fourth and lost his deposit. Mr Leslie, the former Labour MP lost a motion of no confidence among members of his constituency party in 2018. He was one of the founders of The Independent Group, which then became The Independent Group for Change.

    Voter turnout was down by 3.3 percentage points since the last general election.

    More than 40,000 people, 60.4% of those eligible to vote, went to polling stations across the area on Thursday, in the first December general election since 1923.

    Four of the six candidates, Robert Swift (Liberal Democrat), Chris Leslie (Independent Group for Change), Damian Smith (The Brexit Party) and Michelle Vacciana (Green) lost their £500 deposits after failing to win 5% of the vote.

    There's been a big turnout in the Harborough constituency - 57,534 people cast their vote, that's 72% of potential voters.

    In their neighbouring constituency, South Leicestershire, where there has also been a by-election, the turnout was 72%.

    Just spoken to Conservative candidate Leigh Higgins in Chesterfield.

    He says if he's successful he will move to the town. He is currently based in Melton Mowbray, Leicestershire where he is a borough councillor.

    He says "let's unleash Chesterfield's potential" and "Get Brexit done".

    He stands by Boris Johnson and says the positive exit poll is because of the Conservative agenda to invest in police, NHS and schools.

    Asked whether he feels confident about gaining the seat tonight, he replied: "It's very tight and there's still a lot of votes to count".
