    Former Labour MP Chris Leslie left the party in February to establish The Independent Group For Change.

    Ruth Edwards has been elected MP for Rushcliffe, meaning that the Conservative Party holds the seat with a decreased majority.

    The new MP beat Labour's Cheryl Pidgeon by 7,643 votes. This was fewer than Kenneth Clarke’s 8,010 vote majority in the 2017 general election.

    Jason Billin of the Liberal Democrats came third and UKIP's Matthew Faithfull came fourth.

    Voter turnout was up by 0.5 percentage points since the last general election.

    Nearly 61,000 people, 78.5% of those eligible to vote, went to polling stations across the area on Thursday, in the first December general election since 1923.

    Two of the five candidates, Matthew Faithfull (UKIP) and John Kirby (independent) lost their £500 deposits after failing to win 5% of the vote.

    Claudia Webbe has been elected MP for Leicester East, meaning that the Labour Party holds the seat with a decreased majority.

    The new MP beat Conservative Bhupen Dave by 6,019 votes. This was considerably fewer than former Labour MP Keith Vaz, who won a 22,428 vote majority in the 2017 general election.

    Mr Vaz, who was suspended from the Commons after he was found to have "expressed willingness" to purchase cocaine for others, did not stand for re-election.

    Nitesh Dave of the Liberal Democrats came third and the Brexit Party's Tara Baldwin came fourth.

    Voter turnout was down by 4.4 percentage points since the last general election.

    After nearly 50 years, Rushcliffe has a new MP.

    Ken Clarke will be kicking off his Hush Puppies and popping on some slippers as Ruth Edwards takes on the Conservative's representative in the Nottinghamshire constituency.

    In her acceptance speech, she paid tribute to Mr Clarke.

    "As I'm stepping up to the plate tonight, someone far greater than me is stepping down.

    "So I'd like to thank Ken Clarke, who's given nearly half a century of service to this constituency and also to our country.

    "It's been a real privilege to get to know Ken over the last few months and his counsel has been invaluable.

    "He has set a very high standard for Rushcliffe's MP, and I'll be doing my best to live up to it."

    Shadow health secretary Jonathan Ashworth has been re-elected MP for Leicester South, meaning that the Labour Party holds the seat with a decreased majority.

    The MP beat Conservative Natalie Neale by 22,675 votes. This was fewer than Mr Ashworth’s 26,261 vote majority in the 2017 general election.

    Chris Coghlan of the Liberal Democrats came third and the Green Party's Mags Lewis came fourth.
