Melania Trump refused to participate in a joint video statement with her husband immediately following the release of the sex-boast audio, the New York Times reported, external, citing anonymous sources within the campaign.

The concept of a joint statement was reportedly dropped after top Republican lawmakers condemned Trump, and Nancy O'Dell, who was the subject of his lewd remarks in the audio, released a statement.

Trump later made a public video apology over the comments.

Despite the abundance of wishful Beltway analysis insisting that Trump really is sunk this time, a Politico/Morning Consult poll, external released on Sunday indicates a majority of Republican voters still support him, despite Friday's release of the 2005 sex-boast tape heard around the world.

The poll found 74% of Republican voters surveyed on Saturday said the party should still back Trump.

Only 13% reckoned their party should abandon the candidate.

The poll also put Clinton ahead by four points, 42 to 38, over Trump.

    Gary Johnson was on 8%.

  4. 'Sexist and abusive'published at 23:11 British Summer Time 9 October 2016

"I suggest Trump lay off our vaginas. He is in a whole ocean of hot political water. Enough, quite possibly, to sink any chance he had of winning the White House.

Why this tape - and not the myriad other controversies that have dogged him in recent weeks? First, analyse what he actually says. There is something particularly sexist, I'd say abusive, about this recording.

It's the way Trump reveals that he sees women as a piece of sexual meat, something he wants, grabs, discards that is so damning."

  7. 'Demeaning, degrading women'published at 22:18 British Summer Time 9 October 2016

Moments ago, President Obama was the latest to upbraid Trump over the decade-old recording in which the businessman is heard making extremely lewd comments about women. Speaking in his political heartland of Illinois, Mr Obama said: "I don't need to repeat it. There are children in the room... Demeaning, degrading women... He puffs himself up by putting other people down."

  8. Are you sitting comfortably?published at 22:14 British Summer Time 9 October 2016

Hello and welcome to our live coverage of what must surely be the most anticipated US presidential debates in the history of the format. With 29 days until Americans go to the polls, the stakes are much higher tonight than in Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton’s first battle of wits nearly two weeks ago. Friday’s revelations about the Republican nominee’s 2005 "hot mic" sex boasts have left his candidacy as toxic to many in his own party as a ruptured nuclear reactor. The Democratic nominee, meanwhile, has her own problems to worry about. A newly leaked transcript of her speeches to Wall Street banks shows how she dreamed of "open trade and open borders", verboten phrases in this heady election cycle of anti-globalist populism. This promises to be utterly unmissable television!

  9. Before we leave you, here's a summary...published at 00:54 British Summer Time 9 October 2016

The tremors from Friday's night explosive release of the Trump video tape have been felt throughout the day.

There are now 14 Republican senators who have vowed not to back the nominee, including John McCain.

Vice-President Joe Biden has accused Trump of sexual assault.

Trump's running mate Mike Pence has condemned the remarks and pulled out of a party event, reportedly furious.

Sunday will feature Trump's aides on the morning news shows, then the big showdown in St Louis on the debate stage with Hillary Clinton. Rejoin us then, or follow the latest developments here.

  10. Why tomorrow night's debate is a must-watchpublished at 00:45 British Summer Time 9 October 2016

    Clinton and TrumpImage source, AF

Clinton and Trump will go head-to-head in their second debate, at Washington University in St Louis, Missouri, at 21:00 US time (02:00 BST) on Sunday night.

This time it's a "town meeting" format and half of the questions will be asked by audience members who are all undecided voters. The other half will be based on topics of broad public interest.

The second debate was always expected to be a more heated affair than the first but Trump's sex boast tape and Hillary's leaked banking speeches have made it a bad day for both candidates, and the bitter rivals will be keen to exploit each other's weakness. Buy some popcorn and get set for a blockbuster.

  13. Farage's advice to Trump on the debatepublished at 00:05 British Summer Time 9 October 2016

Nigel Farage and Donald TrumpImage source, PA

Earlier Nigel Farage told BBC's Newshour the debate will be "pretty rotten" if it "degenerates into the sexual propriety of the Trumps versus the Clintons".

"He might have said it, Hillary's husband actually did it," he said.

On how Trump should approach the debate, he advised: "Say look I'm sorry - I know this sounds gross - but do you know what, very often, men together are boastful and say things that they think are in private and they would not wish to see on the front page of national newspapers. I'm not perfect, I've said and done things in my life that I'm not particularly proud of but I am who I am".

Trump also "needs to be a little less thin-skinned," and "laugh some of it off", he added.

  16. Expect an ugly Trump v Clinton debatepublished at 23:37 British Summer Time 8 October 2016

    BBC North America Editor

    Image caption,

Mike Pence is said to be furious about the latest Trump scandal

There is always anticipation and expectation ahead of the presidential debates, but this is altogether different. There is a concerted "dump Trump" movement.

In an extraordinary and turbulent 36 hours, a succession of senior Republicans have withdrawn their support for Mr Trump; others have stuck to condemnation.

None has sought to minimise the seriousness of the situation. Even Mr Trump's running mate, the Indiana governor Mike Pence, has sought to distance himself - a sure sign of the discord at the top of the party.

But there is no easy way to get rid of a candidate who doesn't want to go willingly. And the millions of Trump supporters still loyal to him would feel betrayed if he was forced out.

And more practically, Americans have already started voting. What would happen to the ballots already cast? So it looks like the Republican Party is stuck with the billionaire businessman.

All of which leaves the question open of how Mr Trump approaches the debate on Sunday night. In his apology he quickly tried to say that the Clintons had done far worse things in their treatment of women. This debate will be fascinating - and potentially extremely ugly.

The split in the Republican party was evident to journalists at a festival in Speaker Paul Ryan's home state of Wisconsin earlier today. Trump was supposed to be standing by his side on stage, but was uninvited after Ryan said last night he was "sickened" by his offensive comments. Some of the crowd chanted Trump's name as Ryan spoke.
