We saw the report about Donald Trump not paying taxes dominating part of the debate - so it's interesting to note this interview with his son Eric afterwards.

  2. Clash over emailspublished at 04:27 British Summer Time 5 October 2016

We didn't see Hillary Clinton's email row pop up for too long during the presidential debate last week - but it did get quite a bit of attention this time around.

  3. Job done for Pencepublished at 04:19 British Summer Time 5 October 2016

    Anthony Zurcher
    BBC North America reporter

It was a scattershot debate, and at times the subjects changed so jarringly it felt like the speed round of a game show. In the end, however, Mike Pence did what he had to do.

His goal was to reassure Republicans panicked by Donald Trump’s debate performance last week and his bungling in the days that followed that cooler heads will prevail. He did that.

His calm, steady style - honed over years as a talk show host - stood in marked contrast to Tim Kaine’s over-caffeinated demeanour and rapid-fire attacks.

At times, of course, it seemed like Pence was talking about a Donald Trump who doesn’t exist - one who doesn’t have a year-long history of inflammatory statements and controversial stands. And Mr Kaine was quick to call him on it.

Mr Pence’s accomplishment, however, was to defend his traditional conservatism and make the case to wandering Republicans - particularly educated suburban voters - that they still have a home in the party.

On Tuesday night, Mr Pence stopped the bleeding. At best, however, he has turned the page on a disastrous week and given Mr Trump an opportunity to get back in the race. It is up to him to make the most of it.

In one of the spikier moments, the candidates questioned each other's stance on the country's relationship with Russia and Vladimir Putin, arguing whether Donald Trump had endorsed the Russian president. Pence said: "There's an old proverb that says the Russian bear never dies, it just hibernates."

Donald Trump began his campaign by declaring that Mexico was sending rapists across the border.

When Kaine recalled this, Pence chimed in with "You whipped out that Mexican thing again".

    The internet appreciated the phrasing.

  11. No LGBT questions?published at 03:42 British Summer Time 5 October 2016

Kaine invited a lesbian couple to join the audience, and we were anticipating it might be a line of attack against Pence, whose record on LGBT issues has been under scrutiny.

It's fair to say that the lack of a question on that issue has not gone unnoticed in the LGBT community.

  13. Pence on tradepublished at 03:40 British Summer Time 5 October 2016

Pence said the US economy is "truly struggling" and is stifled by "trade deals that have put American workers in the back seat".

But the governor has been a strong supporter of free trade while his running mate has made anti-trade policies a cornerstone of his campaign.

As a member of Congress, Pence voted for "every free-trade agreement that came before him", according to the Washington Post, external

He backed trade agreements with Colombia, South Korea, Panama, Peru, Oman, Chile and Singapore while in the House from 2001 to 2012. He also voted for the Central American Free Trade Agreement.

He supported TPP, which Trump has condemned, in 2014 and again in 2015, when he sent a letter to Indiana’s congressional delegation urging them to support the deal.

  15. 'How will you unify the country?'published at 03:36 British Summer Time 5 October 2016

Final question, and Kaine says "after election day the goal is to work together" and Hillary Clinton has a track record of reaching across the aisle.

Pence: "I think the best way we can bring the American people together is through change in Washington DC ... the potential is there to really change the direction of this country. When Donald Trump becomes president of the United States ... the American people will stand tall."

He says that Trump has the smarts and business knowledge to engineer "an American comeback".

    Media caption,

Trump taxes spark vice-presidential debate row

The row over Donald Trump's tax returns produced a heated exchange earlier in the debate. Pence defended Trump's financial record, while Kaine said even Richard Nixon published his tax details.

  17. Abortion clashpublished at 03:31 British Summer Time 5 October 2016

Pence: "The very idea that a child that is almost born into the world could still have their life taken from them is just anathema to me."

Kaine: "We support the constitutional right of American women to consult their own conscience ... to make their own decision about pregnancy. We don't think that women should be punished, as Donald Trump said they should, for choosing to have an abortion."

Mike Pence: 'I couldn't be more proud to stand with a pro-life candidate like Donald Trump'

Pence says women would not be punished for having an abortion if Trump were president, adding that he misspoke when he said that: "He's not a polished politician, like you and Hillary Clinton."

Pence has long opposed abortion, signing one of the strictest abortion laws in the country earlier this year that made it illegal for women to have an abortion because of the gender or disability status of the foetus.

Kaine: "Why don't you trust women to make this choice for themselves?"

  19. 'Pay to play'published at 03:22 British Summer Time 5 October 2016

Pence hits back that the Clinton foundation has been a platform for the Clintons to travel the world, and we would know a lot more about it if Hillary Clinton would turn over the 33,000 emails she deleted.

Pence accuses the Clinton family of starting the Clinton foundation to get around laws that prohibit foreign governments from contributing money to influence the political process. The Clinton family created a loophole to accept "tens of millions of dollars" in contributions, Pence said.

"The reason people don't trust Hillary Clinton is they're looking at the pay-to-play politics that she operated at the Clinton Foundation through a private server."

  20. 'An octopus-like organisation'published at 03:20 British Summer Time 5 October 2016

Kaine defends Clinton foundation from Pence's accusations of sleaze. Hillary Clinton as secretary of state, he says, took no action to benefit the Clinton foundation, says State Dept gave the charity a clean bill of health. He says Trump foundation is "an octopus-like organisation with tentacles all over the world" which only benefits the Trump children.
