As many Republicans rushed to distance themselves from Trump's obscene sexist comments, some said they were speaking on behalf of "wives and daughters" - and it didn't go unnoticed on Twitter.

"As the father of three daughters, I strongly believe that Trump needs to apologise directly to women and girls everywhere, and take full responsibility for the utter lack of respect for women shown in his comments on that tape," said Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell.

A 2014 Toast piece "As A Father Of Daughters, I Think We Should Treat All Women Like My Daughters", external also started doing the rounds.

"It didn’t always used to be this way. I used to only have sons... How merrily I used to drive down country lanes in my old Ford, periodically dodging off-road to mow down female pedestrians (you must remember I had no daughters then). Was what I did wrong? How was I to know? I had no daughters to think of."

Republican Vice Presidential nominee Mike Pence says he cannot condone or defend Donald Trump's comments about women.

"As a husband and a father, I was offended by the words and actions described by Donald Trump in the 11-year-old video released yesterday. I do not condone his remarks and cannot defend them. I am grateful that he has expressed remorse and apologized to the American people," he said in a statement.

He went on say: "We pray for his family and look forward to the opportunity he has to show what is in his heart when he goes before the nation tomorrow night.''

"Why this tape - and not the myriad other controversies that have dogged him in recent weeks? First, analyse what he actually says. There is something particularly sexist, I'd say abusive, about this recording," writes BBC World News' Katty Kay.

"A couple of weeks ago, after the row over Trump "fat-shaming" Alicia Machado, I suggested the Republican candidate lay off our weight. Now, and I can hardly believe I'm having to write this, I suggest he lay off our vaginas."

Republican presidential nominee Donald TrumpImage source, Reuters

Trump has told the Washington Post, external he will "never withdraw" from the race, following calls from several in his party to do so.

“I’d never withdraw. I’ve never withdrawn in my life,” Trump told the paper in a phone call. “No, I’m not quitting this race. I have tremendous support.”

“People are calling and saying, ‘Don’t even think about doing anything else but running,” Trump went on to say when asked about party defections.

He also took the opportunity to have another dig at rival Hillary Clinton, saying she's made it easier for the party to stay behind him.

“It’s because she’s so bad. She’s so flawed as a candidate. Running against her, I can’t say it’d be the same if I ran against someone else, but running against her makes it a lot easier, that’s for sure.”

  10. Is Donald Trump's campaign over?published at 16:33 British Summer Time 8 October 2016

Among all the media fallout, two things stand out.

    1) Did he really apologise? And 2) has his campaign terminally imploded?

Glenn Thrush and Katie Glueck, writing for Politico, external, say it is "fitting that the election of Hillary Clinton as the first female president might have been sealed by Donald Trump's treatment of women as subordinate, interchangeable, pliable playthings".

Stephen Collinson for CNN, external says the "stunning developments are forcing a moment of reckoning for Republican Party leaders who have made a pact with a nominee many of them privately view as vulgar and unacceptable, and must now decide whether to cut him loose".

That's all from our live coverage of the vice-presidential debate between Tim Kaine and Mike Pence.

Donald Trump was likened to a "fool or maniac" while Hillary Clinton was dismissed as "weak and feckless".

The BBC's Anthony Zurcher, who was there, reckons Pence won with his "calm, steady style".

Kaine was more notable for his "over-caffeinated demeanour and rapid-fire attacks", Zurcher says.

The Washington Post's Chris Cilizza declared moderator Elaine Quijano of CBS News, to be tonight's undisputed loser.

Here's , externalwhat he had to say:

"Quijano lost control of the debate within minutes of it starting and never really got it back. She seemed to dole out 20 seconds here and 30 seconds there for Pence or Kaine or both to respond to each other with no rhyme or reason.

"She never was able to get Kaine or Pence to, well, stop talking. Then there was the fact that she didn't seem to follow the flow of the debate; Kaine and Pence would be feuding about, say, tax returns and Quijano, after getting the two men to stop talking, would say something like 'Let's talk about North Korea.'"
