    George Stephanopoulos interviews Donald Trump

In an interview with George Stephanopoulos on ABC, Donald Trump defended speechwriter Meredith McIver.

"She's a very good person," he said. "She came to see me because she hated to see the conflict, and she made a mistake."

He also said the media went easy on Melania because they "did not think she actually had anything to do with it".

Top Trump aide Paul Manafort told the Associated Press that Texas Senator Ted Cruz would at least "suggest" he is backing Donald Trump. Mr Cruz has not formally endorsed Mr Trump - an unusual move for a vanquished primary rival at this stage of the election season.

Many convention speakers have kept their mentions of Mr Trump to a minimum and Mr Cruz may not mention him by name at all.

Data journalists at the stats website FiveThirtyEight.com found that "Clinton" is the most used word of the convention, far outpacing "Trump".

Cleveland police said they have made 17 arrests on Wednesday, bringing the total number related to the Republican National Convention this week to 22.

Charges include assaulting officers - who were allegedly punched and pushed - failing to disperse and resisting arrest. Two officers were hurt, not seriously.

In one incident a protester lit the US flag on fire, "then lit himself on fire, catching others on fire." The flames were extinguished by firefighters. There were no serious injuries.

A massive media presence is making it difficult to police protests, police said.
