  16. New York Times: Trump campaign told Kasich he could run policy as VPpublished at 21:18 British Summer Time 20 July 2016

    John KasichImage source, Getty Images

Ohio Governor John Kasich is keeping his distance from the Republican National Convention despite his home state hosting the festivities. Mr Kasich has declined to endorse Donald Trump over the billionaire businessman's polarising views on immigration and foreign policy.

This week the Trump campaign called Kasich's decision to abstain from the convention "petulant" and Mr Trump has repeatedly criticised the governor in interviews.

But a new report in the New York Times asserts, external that the campaign was actively courting the popular governor to be Mr Trump's running mate. The Times reports that Mr Trump's son, Eric, went so far as to promise that if Mr Kasich accepted the VP slot he could oversee foreign and domestic policy. The promise, if true, could have given a Vice-President Kasich unprecedented power.

Eric Trump was reportedly asked what Donald Trump would be in charge of if Mr Kasich was filling a role more traditionally held by the president.

"Making America Great Again" was the reply.
