Kaine says the US needs a "you're hired" president, not a "you're fired" president, which he says is what Donald Trump would be. He predicts Trump's plan of tax cuts for the rich would tip the country into recession. Trumps famous catchphrase on the Apprentice TV show, of course, was "You're fired!"

Pence says Obama administration has almost doubled national debt and his state of Indiana has balanced budgets. That's a little bit different, he says, than when Kaine was governor of Virginia, casting him as a tax-and-regulations Democrat.

  15. 'Avalanche of insults'published at 02:15 British Summer Time 5 October 2016

Kaine interrupts Pence to say "You guys love Russia" after the Republican candidate started to describe the "newly emboldened" former cold war rival.

"I must have hit a nerve," Pence responded, pivoting to the US struggling economy.

Pence hits back that Clinton-Kaine have led a campaign of an "avalanche of insults". He says the Clinton foundation accepted donations from foreign governments while she was secretary of state.

  17. Why should we trust Clinton?published at 02:12 British Summer Time 5 October 2016

Kaine says Hillary Clinton has been focused on helping others all her life. "She's always been about putting others first - that's a sharp contrast with Donald Trump - he built a business career off the backs of the little guy. I can't imagine how Governor Pence can defend the insult-driven style of Trump."

Republican vice-presidential nominee Gov. Mike Pence, right, speaks as Democratic vice-presidential nominee Sen. Tim Kaine listens during the vice-presidential debate at Longwood University in Farmville, Va.Image source, AP

Kaine cites the young black student Barbara Johns, who led a school walkout leading to the court case which racially desegregated public schools. "I'm proud to be running with another strong history making woman," Kaine said about his running mate Hillary Clinton.

He says Clinton told him: "You’ve been a missionary and a civil rights lawyer, a mayor, a governor and US senator, I think you will help me to govern this nation - that’s what I bring to the ticket. The thought of Donald Trump as president scares us to death."
