    The highest ranked Republican has often found himself at odds with his party's nominee, and said last month that he was no longer defending him.

    ABC News projects New Mexico will go to Hillary Clinton.

    Once a swing state, New Mexico has leaned increasingly Democratic in recent elections, except for in 2004 when the state went for George W Bush. In 2012, Barack Obama won 53% of the vote. Increased Hispanic voter likely aided a Clinton win in the border state.

    Missouri, home to the city of St Louis, has voted Republican in the previous four elections. Barack Obama came close in 2008, but he was well-beaten by Mitt Romney four years later.

    Fox and CNN projected a win for Clinton in Virginia, the first swing state to have a projected result.
