Woman of the night Adele has closed the show by performing When We Were Young - having changed into a spangly star-printed dress to do so.

You've got to love someone who can break off from a pitch-perfect performance to point to the fans in front of the stage and say: "You remind me of when I was young, you lot down there."

She'll be glad not to have had any technical glitches like those which beset her Grammys performance.

Asked how it felt, frontman Kevin Parker said: "I don't know yet. It literally happened two seconds ago. I won't get a chance to process it for a good few minutes."

The band were also asked if they'd approached Rihanna to discuss her recent cover of their song New Person, Same Old Mistakes.

"She hasn't said hello yet," joked Kevin. "She was quite rude in that regard."

"Even though [she did] that song, it would take a lot of balls to walk up to Rihanna and just say 'hey,'" added drummer Jay Watson.

After the speeches, David Bowie's band played a medley of his best-known hits, with images of the late, great singer's face beamed on screens above the stage.

They were then joined by Lorde for Life on Mars - after Oldman told the audience that Bowie had proclaimed her to be the future of music.

A weeping Adele won the global success award and managed to turn the air blue for a second or two in her excitement.

She said she didn't know if she was crying because of the video montage that was played before she accepted the award - or if it was because British astronaut Tim Peake was the one announcing she was the winner.

"I thought I was so lost for a while, and for you all to be so kind to me is amazing," she said.

"Not bad for a girl from Tottenham who don't like flying, and thanks to Tim Peake, I love you - I hope you're okay and not too hungry."
