Guest presenter Simon Pegg - in a great Davie Bowie/Stormtrooper mashup t-shirt - has announced that Coldplay have won the Brit award for best British group.

The band, who kicked off the show, have now become the most successful group in Brits history.

Singer Chris Martin said: "Thanks for being so nice to us, it means so much, we'd like to thank the other bands. The first album I ever bought was Leisure by Blur in 1991.

"We'd like to dedicate this to the young men and women musicians in refugee camps around the world."

The best British single award has been presented to Adele, her second win of the night after winning best female.

She exclaimed as she climbed on stage: "I nearly fell over!".

    Quote Message

I was not expecting this one at all, all those songs I've got, I love all them songs. It's getting out of hand already. Everyone has been amazing so far, I thought you were going to set us on fire Justin!

Adele didn't seem to enjoy having Hello belting out across the arena, however.

"Oh, shut her up, turn me down," she urged as she crossed the stage to accept the award from Suki Waterhouse and Simon Le Bon.

  6. James Bay and Justin Bieber collaborate for Brits performancepublished at 20:36 Greenwich Mean Time 24 February 2016

Here's a collaboration we couldn't have predicted - James Bay playing the guitar to accompany Justin Bieber on his track Love Yourself.

The two JBs sounded pretty good together, we reckon.

Bieber then took to a literally flaming stage, lit by an image of a full moon, for Sorry.

Fearne Cotton took this great shot of the pair performing.

It's a very floral performance, with petals raining down on the audience.

Pop star Charli XCX is here, a day after revealing a dark, experimental new single Trophy, external

"I always like to change it up," says the star, who's best known for the chart-friendly hooks of Fancy and Boom Clap.

"I get bored doing the same thing. But Trophy is just a prelude to the album. The album definitely has some wild moments like that but there'll be some more chilled pop moments on there, too."

  14. Major Lazer: "Jesus would have been a fan"published at 19:59 Greenwich Mean Time 24 February 2016

    Major LazerImage source, Reuters

Dance act Major Lazer are up for best international group after their hit Lean On became the most-streamed song ever on Spotify.

According to the Swedish company, the infectious dancehall record has been heard 526 million times in six months. Played consecutively, that would take 2,709 years - taking the band back to Roman times.

"Back to the old Jesus days!" laughs Diplo. "I feel like he would have been a big fan of Major Lazer too. He'd have got the Egyptian cloth and just partied."

Despite their... er divine endorsement, the band don't think they have much chance of lifting a Brit tonight.

"We have no idea why we're here. We heard Nandos was open late so we thought we'd check it out."

  17. Brits organisers respond to diversity debatepublished at 19:48 Greenwich Mean Time 24 February 2016

    Brit award trophiesImage source, PA

With diversity very much a hot topic at this year's event, the organisers have now released a statement which reads:

    Quote Message

The Brits take the issue of diversity very seriously and have always endeavoured to celebrate as broad a range of what's popular in today's music as possible.

    Quote Message

There are no individual awards for specific genres however, and since only a small number of Brits are awarded every year, the artists who are honoured tend to be those who have achieved the very highest levels of chart success.

    Quote Message

Given the rapidly changing landscape of music consumption, it may now be time to take a fresh look at the metrics around the Brit Awards to ensure they reflect the full range of engagement with recorded music.

Will any mention be made by tonight's winners? We just have to wait and see...

"She has an incredible voice and incredible honesty and she's gorgeous."

It has been an incredible 12 months for the London-based artist after her second album Blood charted at number two.

"I've been everywhere," she tells us. "I've been touring a lot and promoting my album and I've been getting started making my third album, or writing it at least.

"I'd like to have it written by the end of the year so I can have it out next year."

US musician (and former Fleet Fox) Father John Misty is up for best international male at tonight's show.

    Quote Message

My publicist said earlier that I have 'literally no chance of winning the award.' So I would like to sit anonymously and watch Rihanna.

His album, I Love You Honeybear, is a lush love letter to his wife, Emma, shot through with a dark, acerbic humour and some scathing lyrics about his own failings.

"I'm not trying to be funny but I know certain sentiments don't really belong in a song," he says. "And those are the sentiments I enjoy the most."
