SZA causes Brits upset by beating Taylor Swiftpublished at 21:27 Greenwich Mean Time 2 March
21:27 GMT 2 MarchMark Savage
BBC Music correspondentSZA beating Taylor Swift to the international prize could definitely be considered an upset. Swift was was the biggest-selling artist of last year, quite apart from her record-shattering Eras tour and the huge cultural conversation around her love life and musical output.
She even triggered an earthquake at one of her concerts.
But SZA’s second album SOS clearly resonated more with the 1,300 Brits voters (Taylor Swift’s output last year was two re-recordings, of her albums Speak Now and 1989).
A hugely articulate and emotional account of the ups and downs of post-millennial relationships, it scooped several Grammys earlier this year - and SZA herself gave a stunning, Grand Guignol performance of the standout single Kill Bill.
As important as Swift is to pop, SZA is to R&B. And for that alone, she’s a deserving winner.

21:24 GMT 2 March"What is actually happening right now...? I just don't understand," says Raye, picking up her third award of the night.
She says she released her first mixtape when she was 16. "But I do feel like a new artist - I got to start again. The artist I was three years ago would not believe the sight she's seeing today."
She thanks her mum, dad and grandma. We think she might need to find more people to thank...

It’s clearly a very prized possession for them already!

BBC News Culture reporterThere's just been a moment in the show where host Roman Kemp sat by Kylie and pointed out that on her table is magnum-sized bottle of her own brand of rosé wine.
He then makes her take her high heels off. Pours beer in it. And makes her drink from one, and him the other.
She seemed apprehensive but chugged it down anyway. Then the camera cut back to host Maya Jama who joked that Kemp had athletes foot.
The best R&B award - a new addition this yearpublished at 21:08 Greenwich Mean Time 2 March
21:08 GMT 2 MarchMark Savage
BBC Music correspondentThe Best R&B Award, just won by Raye, is one of five new additions this year. Previously, R&B artists were forced to compete in a combined best pop/R&B category - which was predictably dominated by mainstream stars like Harry Styles and Dua Lipa.
Singer Mahalia voiced her dissatisfaction at the 2023 Brits ceremony, turning up in a Burberry jacket with the words "Long Live R&B" painted on the back. Speaking to BBC News last year, she welcomed the change.
"This is huge,” she said. For me, when the [combined] category got announced a couple of years ago, I was disappointed for the younger generation of R&B kids, who were going to think a Brit nomination was impossible.
"I was kind of feeling that, too. If I'm in a longlist with all of these huge art pop artists, I don't know how I'm going to shine through... So my initial reaction to the change was just pure happiness and pride."

Raye: The Brit’s most nominated artistpublished at 21:03 Greenwich Mean Time 2 March
21:03 GMT 2 MarchRaye may be the Brit Award’s Songwriter of the Year and Best R&B Artist but her story has been far from easy.
Born Rachel Agatha Keen and raised in Croydon, it could be argued that music is a part of her DNA with a dad working as a musical director of a local church, while her sister is a successful songwriter, having penned songs for stars like Ariana Grande and Rihanna.
Her first single featuring British DJ Jax Jones catapulted Raye into mainstream notoriety, but by 2021, the artist began to feel stagnant.
Writing on X (formerly Twitter), she detailed a battle she was having with record label Polydor to release her own album, saying the time that "I am giving away [songs] to A list artists because I am still waiting for confirmation that I am good enough to release an album”.
Despite these struggles, she endured. And that leap of faith appears to have paid off as 18 months after her departure from Polydor, Raye claimed her first number one single with her song Escapism.
The London-born star is proving to be one of the most sought after acts at the Brits this year, breaking the record for the highest number of nominations by a single artist.
