Jungle's award is a win for the new generationpublished at 20:52 Greenwich Mean Time 2 March

    Mark Savage
    BBC Music correspondent

The group of the year category was very much a case of classic rockers vs the young upstarts - with Blur and the Rolling Stones up again against drill and dance artists.

In the end, the new generation got it - Jungle, a dance music collective from West London, who specialise in dusty funk jams, and spectacular dance videos.

The band themselves are fairly anonymous, so it’s strange to see them on stage speaking. It looks like it feels a little awkward for them, too. We’ll get to see them perform live later - at which point you’ll suddenly realise why they beat some of British rock’s most storied bands.

  4. Jungle trio love each other 'from the bottom of their hearts'published at 20:52 Greenwich Mean Time 2 March

Keeping it "short and sweet", the Jungle band members thank their family, fans and choreographers and dancers who have brought alive their music.

They also confirm that they are "best mates" and love each other from the "bottom of my heart", before hugging and walking off stage.

"I don't really know what to say right now," says Raye, as she admits that she is "shaking".

"I've always dreamed of saying that," she explains as she thanks her team and her distribution team, leaving with an excited squeal and a spin.

Could this award set Raye up for a clean sweep?published at 20:43 Greenwich Mean Time 2 March

    Mark Savage
    BBC Music correspondent

This is the first award of the night for Raye - maybe setting her up for a clean sweep?

Escapism was written in the depths of despair - as the singer’s career faltered and she turned to drink and drugs to numb the pain.

When she presented it to her record label, they said it was too dark. But after going independent in 2022, she put the song out on her own and saw it go to number one. It’s very much the reason she is here in front of us now.

  11. Purple sprouting broccoli, anyone?published at 20:39 Greenwich Mean Time 2 March

I’ve just taken a peek at the menu that the VIPs are dining on tonight, as I make my way through sandwiches in the media centre.

The celebs' dinner menu includes an ancient grains poke bowl for starters, with crispy kale and leek spring roll.

For mains, it’s duck breast, with braised celeriac and purple sprouting broccoli. There’s also a vegan option - woodland mushroom ‘cordon bleu’. And for dessert, it’s cinnamon spiced apple cheesecake. Nom nom.

At the helm of tonight’s show are radio broadcasters Clara Amfo and Roman Kemp, alongside television presenter Maya Jama.

Last year, the trio hosted the Brit Awards Red Carpet show, as comedian Mo Gilligan hosted the ceremony.

  14. Are there any controversies this year?published at 20:29 Greenwich Mean Time 2 March

    Noor Nanji
Culture reporter at The O2 Arena

The night is young… anything could happen.

But going into the ceremony, the biggest shock is probably that Lewis Capaldi and Ed Sheeran weren’t nominated for the Best Album award.

Both are massive names, and both released albums last year that dominated the charts. But they missed out on the Album of the Year award and only received one nomination each.

The Rolling Stones were also snubbed, getting just one nomination despite the positive response to Hackney Diamonds, the band’s first collection of original songs since 2005.

  16. What could Raye win?published at 20:23 Greenwich Mean Time 2 March

    Yasmin Rufo
    BBC News Culture reporter

The singer is nominated for best artist, album, song (twice), new artist, pop act and R&B act.

Because of her double nomination in the best song category - for Prada and Escapism - she could scoop a maximum of six trophies tonight.

But after she was named best songwriter - an award that wasn't part of the main nominations process and was announced separately on Wednesday - she could theoretically win seven 2024 Brit Awards in total.

The current record for the most Brits at a single ceremony is four, jointly held by Blur (1995), Adele (2016) and Harry Styles (2023).

  17. Luke Evans looked the partpublished at 20:11 Greenwich Mean Time 2 March

The red carpet is now closed, but short while before it did, Luke Evans stopped by to chat.

The Welsh actor and singer (he has released two albums and played the role of Gaston in the 2017 Disney live-action adaptation of Beauty and the Beast) shared that Kylie was the first album he bought, saying he loved her song I Should Be So Lucky.

Evans is presenting the alternative rock category with English actress Marisa Abela, who is playing the late singer Amy Winehouse in the film Back to Black.

He was dressed the part - black nails included.

For those wondering, our music correspondent Mark Savage's first album was ABBA's Arrival.

  18. 'I will never not be writing' - Rayepublished at 20:06 Greenwich Mean Time 2 March

Earlier, the BBC spoke to Raye - the artist who (yes, we're going to say it again) has been nominated for the most awards in Brits history.

On having already won the Songwriter of the Year award, she said: "It's where the journey started for me... what an accolade... it's a miracle".

So there’s half an hour before the ceremony starts. That’s plenty of time for the celebs to get a drink, have a mingle, and get seated before the event kicks off. There’s dinner too - more on that shortly.

The journalists, meanwhile, are frantically packing up and rushing over to the media centre, where we’ll be watching the events unfold. There’s food in the media centre too, so don’t feel too sorry for us.

  20. With that, the red carpet is closedpublished at 19:55 Greenwich Mean Time 2 March

And that’s a wrap! The red carpet (or grey, in this case) has closed. The ceremony is going to start soon, and I’ll be heading to the winners’ lounge to greet the first successful artists. Stay with us for all the updates from behind the scenes.
