    Minister for the Armed Forces, Mike Penning, has praised troops who have been deployed to areas at risk from severe flooding. 

    "We like to be in front of the problems, but traditionally we have always waited for the problems to come," he said. 

    "Now we have tried to get in first - to be there alongside the other emergency services and I'm really proud of what our troops are doing today."

    The Met Office has removed a number of its yellow "be aware" warnings, but one for ice has stayed in place. 

    It said that it is likely to form where there have been sleet, snow and hail showers on untreated surfaces, and 2cm to 4cm of snow may fall in low lying areas of Scotland. 

    "This may lead to the risk of disruption with difficult driving conditions and expect longer journey times."

    The warning is valid from 16:00 GMT until midday on Saturday.

  19. More severe flood warnings issuedpublished at 13:27 Greenwich Mean Time 13 January 2017

    The Environment Agency has now issued 16 severe flood warnings, external, meaning danger to life. These are along the east coast of England.

    There are also 87 flood warnings, meaning flooding is expected, and 57 flood alerts, meaning flooding is possible.
