  9. 'Tonight is going to be horrendous'published at 11:21 Greenwich Mean Time 13 January 2017

BBC weather presenter Louise Lear said whilst the weather situation had been "generally improving" since the morning, Friday night was going to be "horrendous".

She told BBC News: "It is a full Moon at the moment so the gravitational pull of the Moon is at its strongest across the waters. Coupled with potentially strong gusts of winds, which are 60mph at the moment, it could mean the toppling over of flood defences.

"It is getting better, but we must, must stress tonight is going to be horrendous, with temperatures down to -9 and -10, which means a potential skating rink for Saturday."

Sunday is set to be cold, damp, drizzly and mild.

  10. 'Use natural resources against flood threat'published at 11:09 Greenwich Mean Time 13 January 2017

Professor Richard Brazier, of the University of Exeter, said the UK needed to use the natural landscape to deal with the threat of flooding.

"Allowing coastal flood waters onto certain floodplains can prevent higher-value land, with housing or infrastructure, from being flooded," he said.

“Such land is typically agricultural and will rarely be actively farmed in the winter months when these storm surges are at their worst."

Prof Brazier also said former wetland that had been drained could be used again to store flood water.

“Such approaches of managing flood water back on to the land deliver proven benefits for wildlife, including wetland birds," he added.
