    Weather forecasters expect the stormy conditions to subside in the next few hours.

    Met Office amber warnings predicting strong winds and heavy rain are in place for North Wales, the Midlands, the East and the North West and London until 20:00 GMT. 

    Officials said gusts of 60mph-70mph were possible, with 70mph-80mph expected on coasts and hills.

    UK Power Networks say 12,030 homes are without power in Suffolk. In total, around 40,000 homes are without power across East Anglia.

    West Midlands Police say the family of the woman who died in Wolverhampton have been informed and are being supported.

    A spokeswoman said the victim was 29 years old and had been "struck" by wooden debris from a building.

    Officers are working with Wolverhampton Council to establish how the incident happened, she said.

    She added: "The area remains cordoned off while investigations are ongoing."

    Northumbria Police are warning that bogus callers may use Storm Doris as an excuse to scam homeowners., external

    "On Wednesday officers received two reports of men claiming to be builders knocking on doors of homes in the Heaton area," the force said.

    "On both occasions the men told the elderly occupants that they needed repairs doing to their roofs and chimneys and could do the work cash-in-hand.

    "If anyone gets any callers at their door offering building work then do not let them into your home.

    "Do not hand over any money and never assume a cold-caller is telling the truth."

    More on the incident in central London where a man was taken to hospital with reported head injuries.

    It has emerged he was hit debris which fell from the roof of the new Tube entrance at Victoria station.

    A London Ambulance Service spokesperson said the man was treated by paramedics at the scene before being taken to hospital.

    London fire fighters placed a cement bag on the roof of the Tube entrance to prevent further damage.

    West Midlands Ambulance service said a woman driver in her 60s had been taken to hospital after being hit by a carport roof in Hartshill, Stoke-on-Trent.

    A spokesman said: “Crews were told the roof fell down and hit the woman, which subsequently caused her to collide with a wall."

    She was treated for a serious head injury and was said to also be suffering from a slightly reduced level of consciousness.

    Police have issued a photograph of the double-decker bus toppled by high winds in Wisbech, Cambridgeshire. 

    Fifteen people were treated at the scene and 11 taken to hospital with minor injuries.

  17. Virgin Trains to run reduced servicepublished at 16:36 Greenwich Mean Time 23 February 2017

    National Rail Enquiries says high winds and rain are affecting services across the Virgin Trains network. 

    Customers are advised to postpone their journey if possible and tickets will be accepted on services on Friday starting before 14:00 GMT.

    Trains across the whole Virgin Trains network are currently suspended until 17:00 GMT.  A very reduced service is then expected to run until the end of the day. 

    Passengers have been told their tickets can also be used on Friday before 14:00 GMT on services run by London Midland, CrossCountry, TransPennine Express and Arriva Trains Wales.

    A man in central London has been taken to hospital with "head injuries" after police were called over reports of "debris falling from the roof of a building". 

    Scotland Yard said officers found the injured pedestrian after being called to the scene in Victoria Street at around 15:00 GMT.

    Apart from Heathrow, Birmingham, Manchester and Liverpool were among the other airports affected today. 

    An Iceland Air flight was forced to declare an in-flight fuel emergency after failing to land at both Manchester and Liverpool due to the weather.

    Flight FI440 was sent back to Manchester following a second failed landing at Liverpool and touched down safely at Manchester at 11.35 GMT.
