    The Queen has sent a message to the Met's Acting Commissioner Craig Mackey:

    "Following the shocking events in Westminster, Prince Philip and I are sorry that we will not be able to open the New Scotland Yard building as planned today, for very understandable reasons.  I look forward to visiting at a later date. 

    "My thoughts, prayers, and deepest sympathy are with all those who have been affected by yesterday's awful violence.

    "I know I speak for everyone in expressing my enduring thanks and admiration for the members of the Metropolitan Police Service and all who work so selflessly to help and protect others."

    A few more details from Theresa May's opening speech.

    • The prime minister said that policing across the country will be stepped up "to protect communities across the country and to reassure the public"
    • As a precautionary measure, this will include increased patrols and armed police in cities across the country
    • She confirmed that the terror threat level remains set at "severe", meaning that an attack is "highly likely"
    • However, she added that, in the absence of "specific intelligence that an attack is imminent", it will not be raised to "critical", which is the highest level.

    The Archbishop of Canterbury offers "prayers and thoughts for PC Keith Palmer and his family".

    He says a member of Lambeth Palace staff who is a Muslim was "narrowly" missed in the attack on Westminster Bridge and helped the injured for the rest of the day.

    He describes this response as "typical of so many".

    Terror came on Wednesday to the seat of government , external and Parliament for the first time since the IRA attacked Downing Street with mortar fire in 1991. Prior to that, in 1979 Airey Neave MP was murdered by a bomb planted in his vehicle which went off in the House of Commons car park. This time, people walking on Westminster Bridge were mown down by a car whose driver then proceeded to Parliament.
