    There are huge delays on the A19 in the North East after 15 vehicles crashed northbound and four vehicles crashed southbound near Wingate.

    There are minor injuries, Durham police said.

  2. Elderly woman found dead in Leeds snowpublished at 14:43 Greenwich Mean Time 1 March 2018

    An elderly woman has been found dead in the snow in Leeds.

    Officers were called out to Well Street, Farsley, at 06:11 GMT and found the 75-year-old partially under a car.

    The woman's family has been contacted.

    Detective Inspector James Entwistle, said: "We are currently carrying out inquiries into the circumstances, but at this stage there is nothing to suggest her death is suspicious.

    "We have established the woman's identity and are in contact with her family.

    "We would like to hear from anyone who saw her in the area at any time prior to her being found this morning. She may have appeared confused."

  3. One person in hospital after M66 crashpublished at 14:35 Greenwich Mean Time 1 March 2018

    One person has been taken to hospital following the M66 crash that involved 16 vehicles.

    A further 20 people have been treated by paramedics at the scene.

    Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service arrived on the M66 southbound between the Ramsbottom and Bury junction at 11:25 GMT.

    Those involved in the crash were being sheltered in a bus.

    A GMFRS spokesperson said: "On arrival, firefighters found the crash was involving 16 vehicles.

    "Nobody was trapped in any of the vehicles, although paramedics have helped two people that remained in their cars with one since being taken to hospital.

    "A bus is currently being used to provide shelter and care for people unable to remain in their cars. Some are being cared for by paramedics.

    "The area is very busy as the road has had to be closed in both directions. Please avoid it if possible. "

    The commuters who braved this morning's weather to reach work will now be starting to think about the return journey - but will they struggle to make it back?

    Here are the latest updates from National Rail:

    • Disruption to Merseyrail services to and from Southport expected until at least 14:45 GMT
    • Trains between London St Pancras and St Albans are now able to run normally following a points failure between West Hampstead Thameslink and St Albans City
    • Disruption between Diss and Norwich - London Liverpool Street to Norwich services will terminate/start from Ipswich until the snow has been cleared
    • Passengers from Norwich travelling towards London Liverpool Street are advised to travel on the Norwich to Cambridge services, change at Cambridge for services to London Liverpool Street and vice versa

    Cheryl Turpie and her three sons made the most of their snow day by building an igloo - and then spent the night in it.

    Sam,12, told BBC Radio 5 live: “We had lots of layers on, we had thermals and then a full set of clothes and a jumper and we also had sleeping bags."

    He added: “I think it could catch on if we get snow again.”

    The RAF has stepped in to help transport doctors, nurses and other medical staff in Lincolnshire.

    BBC Radio 5 live reporter Stephen Chittenden says the area is under heavy snow, with most of the smaller roads appearing to be closed, except to military 4x4 vehicles.

    Wing Commander Jim Errington is RAF Regional Liaison Officer. He says that "throughout the night we've been ferrying people around the county".

    The RAF has specially trained drivers but he says that "even they are finding conditions very, very tricky on the roads".

    Glasgow Airport has closed for the remainder of the day but could reopen tomorrow.

    All flights were initially grounded until 15:00 GMT but the ongoing amber weather warning from the Met Office has led officials to extend the closure until Friday at the earliest.

    An update regarding tomorrow's situation will be issued later today.

  10. London Overground disruption expected until 'at least' 15:00published at 14:04 Greenwich Mean Time 1 March 2018

    National Rail is reporting numerous incidents across its network, meaning trains may be cancelled, delayed or revised until "at least" 15:00 GMT.

    The problems currently affecting journeys are as follows:

    • Richmond to Stratford: Severe weather has prevented train crews getting to work
    • Willesden Junction to Clapham Junction: More trains than usual needing repairs at the same time
    • Watford Junction to London Euston: A points failure at London Euston
    • Highbury & Islington to West Croydon/Clapham Junction: A train fault at Crystal Palace, a train fault at New Cross Gate and a points failure at Highbury & Islington

    Commuters are advised to check journeys before travelling.

    All bus services in Cornwall run by First Kernow are set to be withdrawn in the next couple of hours.

    The company said it was advising all customers "to make return journeys where still possible, as soon as possible".

    It said: "Our operations teams are putting in place plans to safely return buses to base in the interests of safety.

    "Thank you for your patience and understanding."

    Flood warnings have been announced for the Tyne estuary in Shields and Whitley Bay and Tynemouth., external

    This means flooding is expected and "immediate action" is required.

    The warning reads: "The key area of concern is the Whitley Sands Café location, and wave overtopping is likely at these times, although conditions may apply two to four hours either side of high tide."

    It adds: "Do not drive through flood water or large waves."

    The St David's Day parade went ahead despite the weather. The flag bearer David Petersen said they wouldn't be deterred, “we’ve walked in the snow before and we walk in the snow today".

    About 30 people took part - David said, “we would have walked with three of us”.

    The UK government has sought to reassure people that they won't need to ration their gas usage any time soon.

    Earlier it was reported that National Grid had warned it may not have enough gas to meet UK demand due to the extreme weather conditions and supply issues.

    But the energy minister, Claire Perry, said: “The National Grid is following a standard procedure and people’s domestic supplies won’t be affected.

    "I have spoken to National Grid this morning and we are in constant contact to monitor the gas supply throughout this extreme weather. So do carrying on using your gas heating and cooking meals as normal.”

    Heavy snow closed the airport on Wednesday

    A newly-wed couple have had an unusual start to their honeymoon - stranded in Glasgow Airport.

    Chris and Vicky Robinson, from Stranraer, got married last weekend and were looking forward to a luxury holiday in the Maldives when heavy snow closed the airport on Wednesday.

    Instead of enjoying 30C heat in the Indian Ocean, they spent the night in chairs in Glasgow Airport's main terminal.

    "There were tears to start with but there's not much you can do," Mrs Robinson, 27, said. "We had the perfect wedding so you can't ask for everything."

    The airport remains closed until 15:00 GMT today.
