Sixteen flood warnings, external remain in place, on what has been another busy day for emergency services, airports and rail firms.

A yellow Met Office warning, external for ice applies for large areas of the UK and is not due to expire until 11:00 GMT on Sunday.

The latest forecast is for fresh snow showers across much of Scotland overnight, with heavy rain across the south of the UK.

Some rail operators are warning passengers of which services will be running on Sunday.

After days of disruption, many train companies are beginning to return to a normal timetable.

• South Western Railway, external said a normal service is planned on Sunday on all routes
• Virgin Trains' , externalwest coast route between Carlisle and Scotland will remain closed on Sunday, but there will be a replacement bus service
• Southeastern, external said a normal service will run in Sunday but there are engineering works
• Great Western Railway is planning a “near normal service” on its London and Thames Valley Local routes, external although some trains will be cancelled. For its high speed trains,, external services will run every two hours between Paddington and Bristol Temple Meads while services between Paddington and Exeter, Plymouth or Penzance will run as normal. Services between Paddington and Cheltenham Spa are suspended. For its south west services, external, there will be no trains between: Westbury and Weymouth/Swindon, Portsmouth Harbour and Brighton and Bristol and Severn Beach
• East Midlands Trains, external plans to run its full timetable across its routes on Sunday
• Southern Rail:, external The rail operator is urging people to postpone their journeys until Monday if possible. Southern is running its planned weekend service but, because of engineering works, there will be no trains between London and Gatwick Airport on Sunday. A replacement bus will be available

Snooker player Ronnie O'Sullivan bought food and drink for a homeless man lying in the snow in Cardiff.

The five-time world champion had left the Motorpoint Arena after losing in the quarter-final of the Welsh Open when he came across the man on Friday. He went into a nearby store, bought sandwiches and drinks and handed them over.

An emergency funding scheme has been opened for local authorities in the wake of the severe weather.

The Scottish government said it would consider applications for financial assistance after Scottish Borders Council requested help.

The discretionary fund is designed to help councils which face extra costs as a result of large-scale emergencies.

Communities across Scotland have been answering the government's call to work together to clear the snow.

Scotland continues to recover from the so-called "Beast from the East" with yellow weather warnings in place until Monday.

Transport has been slowly returning to service with the first cross-Border trains to England resuming on Saturday.

Airports and trunk roads are also operating "business as usual".

Electricity North West has restored power to 22,600 homes, external, as of Saturday afternoon, but it added that high winds and heavy snowfall on Saturday meant that "our teams of engineers are experiencing delays in restoring supplies".

A farmer from Somerset says he has had to throw away more than 8,000 litres of milk because lorries were unable to collect it during the snow storms.

Mark Wareham said tankers were unable to get "anywhere near" Sunnyside Farm in Trudoxhill, near Frome, for two days.

He said: "It's a massive impact - dairy farming is tight enough and hard enough without losing money, but what can you do? You've just got to get on with it."

An elderly couple in the Scottish Borders whose remote home was surrounded by 12ft snow-drifts have been rescued, along with their two dogs.

The pair, aged 70 and 71, had no heating and had run out of firewood when they were dug out of their West Linton home by two police officers.

Network Rail's latest statement makes clear that the extreme weather is continuing to cause major problems.

It says: "Our teams are putting in a huge amount of work to keep the railway running and passengers on the move.

"However, there has been, and continues to be, significant snow in many areas and strong winds are causing it to drift, which is presenting a real challenge for workers on the ground."

The company says that, with temperatures expected to rise, it will be looking at its areas of flood risk, including checking bridges.

Network Rail reiterates its advice to passengers not to travel unless "absolutely necessary".

Southeastern has apologised after Friday night's incident at Lewisham, when passengers frustrated with waiting for their trains to move got out and walked along the tracks.

It says: "We understand the conditions were extremely difficult for them whilst we dealt with major disruption caused by ice affecting the power supply to our trains."

Southeastern also makes the point that those passengers who evacuated the trains posed "a significant risk to their safety".

It confirms that compensation will be provided to those "directly affected" and that the independent Rail Accident Investigation Branch will conduct a review of what happened.

Virgin Trains, which had not been running any services north of Newcastle, is resuming trains to and from Scotland.

An hourly service will run between Newcastle and Edinburgh but passengers are urged to only travel if necessary as trains will be busy.

The west coast route between Carlisle and Scotland is still closed with no replacement buses.

Western Power Distribution says there are 1,991 properties without power in Devon and Cornwall.
