    The Met Office website has seen around 10 times the usual amount of visitors and an error message was displayed on the weather warning section.

    Met Office information is also accessible via the Met Office phone app or social media.

    Spokesman Alex Burkill said: "Our website is having a bit of difficulty coping.

    "The app seems to be coping a little bit better with the level of traffic."

    Two Peterborough United players turned sweepers to clear the pitch of snow during the club's League One victory over Walsall.

    Defender Steven Taylor and forward Junior Morias grabbed brooms to clear the snow obscuring the 18-yard box at the ABAX Stadium on Tuesday night.

    The weather almost forced the match to be abandoned as conditions deteriorated 15 minutes from the final whistle.

    A club spokesman said Peterborough were "rewarded with three points", with a 2-1 win at home.

    It might feel like the coldest day of the year, but academics and university staff on strike still have a job to do.

    University strikes have continued with a march in London and events across the country.

    Members of the University and College Union are striking after proposed changes to their pension scheme, which some argue will leave the average lecturer £10,000 a year poorer in retirement.

  6. RAC faced 'busiest day in 10 years'published at 13:52 Greenwich Mean Time 28 February 2018

    On Tuesday the RAC dealt with around 9,500 breakdowns making it the organisation's busiest day for a decade.

    There was a more than 30% increase compared with the normal number of call outs and Wednesday is set to be even busier, a spokesman said.

    ScotRail, which has already been forced to cancel some services today, is telling passengers who are out: "Head for home NOW".

    It comes after the Met Office issued a red warning - the most serious weather warning - for extreme weather in Scotland from 15:00 GMT today until 10:00 GMT tomorrow.

    No trains will run in the red weather area tonight or tomorrow morning.

  13. Travel update: Six Tube lines hit with disruptionpublished at 13:01 Greenwich Mean Time 28 February 2018

    Here's a round-up of the problems affecting the London Underground and Overground., external

    • Bakerloo line: The northernmost stretch of the line, from Queen's Park to Harrow and Wealdstone, has severe delays
    • Central line: There are severe delays on both the east and west ends of the Central line from North Acton to Ealing Broadway/West Ruislip and from Leytonstone to Epping
    • District line: Minor delays between Edgware Road and all three westbound destinations
    • Metropolitan line: Minor delays between Harrow-on-the-Hill and Uxbridge because of a signal failure
    • Piccadilly line: Severe delays because of earlier emergency engineering work at King's Cross
    • Overground: No trains are running between Euston and Willesden Junction. There are severe delays between Willesden Junction and Watford Junction and also Barking to Gospel Oak. Passengers travelling southbound from Surrey Quays will also be hit with delays, as well as between Stratford and Richmond, and Willesden Junction and Clapham Junction

    There may be heavy snow at Wembley but tonight's FA Cup fixture between Tottenham Hotspur and Rochdale is still scheduled to go ahead.

    The game, a replay after a 2-2 drawn at Rochdale, is due to kick-off at 19:45 GMT.

    Fans are being advised to get to Wembley early due to possible disruption caused by the weather.

  16. A1 closed after 'multi-vehicle crash'published at 12:41 Greenwich Mean Time 28 February 2018

    The A1 is closed in both directions between the A57/A614 and B6387 in Nottinghamshire because of a multi-vehicle crash with long delays in both directions, says Highways England.

    On other roads:

    • The A1 northbound has been closed about three miles north of Alnwick due to a three-lorry collision, external
    • There are major problems on both the M1 and A1(M) in South Yorkshire
    • The A11 in between Thetford and Norwich is nearly cleared and work is under way to also clear the A47
    • The A12 in Norfolk is closed southbound between the B1370 and B1375 due to a multi vehicle collision.
    • A lane is closed on the M62 (pictured) in West Yorkshire between J30 and J31 near Castleford following a van fire

  17. 'Too cold to lay bricks'published at 12:34 Greenwich Mean Time 28 February 2018

    According to the Federation of Master Builders, two construction companies have stopped working today due to the snow.

    N London Construction are closing their sites in London until Monday and although not obliged to do so, workers will be paid for the days they are missing.

    Meanwhile Concept Contracts, based in Stanford-le-Hope in Essex, said they have closed two sites because of accessibility and it's too cold to lay bricks. Their subcontractors won't get paid for snow days.

    According to Bristol Zoo Gardens, some animals need extra care in the cold weather.

    The family of gorillas at Bristol Zoo have underfloor heating and get extra bedding, while smaller monkeys are given peanut butter as a "special fatty treat".
