    An unusual sight in Honing, Norfolk, today, where piles of snow have been covered with a coating of soil.

    Caroline Kingdon, who sent the photos, said: "The strong winds have blown the soil off fields to colour the snow - drifts of up to 5ft in place of the roadside.

    "Although the road looks muddy, it is snow, and very slippery!"

    The Southeastern rail firm is urging the public not to travel unless they have no alternative.

    "There are no trains running in East Kent at the moment. Freezing rain has caused ice on the conductor rail, meaning trains between Swanley & Ramsgate, Ashford & Ramsgate / Dover and Otford & Ashford are unable to run," said a statement on its website, external.

    Branches, rubble and other debris blocked roads and pathways.

    The scene has been described as "utter devastation" by residents as the clean-up operation continues.

    Restaurant takeaway company Deliveroo is encouraging its 10,000 riders in England and Wales to notify homelessness charity StreetLink, external of anyone they see sleeping rough on the street.

    While making deliveries, riders will be sent a message reminding them to contact StreetLink either via the charity's app, or on 0300 500 0914, should they see anyone in need of shelter.

    In a statement, Deliveroo said: ‘We have already written to riders urging them to stay safe in the difficult weather conditions, but whilst they will have a home to return to at the end of the night, we recognise that they may encounter others who don’t.

    "By giving our riders the very simple tool of helping them inform the right people of anyone who needs help, we hope this will ensure no one is left in the cold."

    A senior police officer has asked drivers to adopt "a more literal interpretation of the word 'essential'" as many continue to ignore warnings to stay off the roads.

    Chief Inspector Adrian Leisk, head of roads policing across Devon, Cornwall and Dorset, asked those who found themselves stranded overnight on Thursday to consider the consequences of their decision to travel.

    "If we have to rescue you this may put another's life in danger," he warned.

    About 40 vehicles have been involved in a 'pile up' on the A38 at Haldon Hill according to police.

    Cars have skidded and become stranded due to black ice.

    The westbound carriageway has been closed from the A379 onwards.

    On Thursday hundreds of motorists were stranded for hours on the same stretch of road.

    Despite previously stating London Waterloo would close at 20:00 GMT today, Network Rail has now said the station will "remain open as long as South Western [Railway] are able to run services".

    At present South Western says its last train to depart Waterloo will be at 21:42 GMT, though this is subject to change.

  16. Tractors deliver midwives to birth in nick of timepublished at 17:08 Greenwich Mean Time 2 March 2018

    When Ashleigh Lisa went into labour while trapped in her house at Balgedie near Kinross, a call for help was made on social media.

    Off-duty midwives offered to help, and local farmers used their tractors to ferry them to the cut-off house.

    They arrived just in time for the birth of a baby boy.

  17. GOSH brings the snow insidepublished at 17:00 Greenwich Mean Time 2 March 2018

    Sixteen-year-old Lewis Hine has been in and out of hospital since he was diagnosed with a brain tumour at 17 months. At Great Ormond Street Hospital yesterday, he was unable to get out and see the snow, so asked Twitter users to send him their pictures instead.

    But the staff at GOSH did one better. They couldn't get Lewis to the snow, so they brought the snow to him - and in the form of a snowman.

    Lewis described it as the "best day ever" and thanked the "NHS heroes" who made it happen.

    All services have been suspended through Birmingham's New Street Station due to a loss of power to overhead lines, West Midlands Railway has said.

    In a statement, the operator said all lines are currently affected - including the Cross City Line - and that disruption is "expected until at least 17:45".Train tickets for affected routes will be accepted on NX West Midlands bus routes north and south of Birmingham City centre.

    Sunderland's Stadium of Light is providing shelter for homeless and vulnerable people as the UK continues to battle snow and freezing temperatures.

    A "warm room" has been set up with places to sleep, as well as hot food and drinks, in the wake of three days of severe weather.

    Pets are also welcome, the Championship club announced in a statement.

    Open now, the facility will be available until 09:00 GMT on Monday.

    Network Rail has confirmed the Dawlish railway has been damaged by Storm Emma.

    The sea wall, however, remains intact.

    An official statement read: "Following visual inspections this morning we can confirm that the railway between Dawlish and Dawlish Warren sustained damage last night as a result of Storm Emma.

    "There is no structural damage to the sea wall, and the integrity of the railway itself has not been damaged, which is testimony to the quality of the strengthening works Network Rail delivered in 2014."
