    The Met Office, external has two active yellow warnings in place for Saturday. One, warning of ice, applies to much of south-east England, the Midlands, Wales and Northern Ireland. The warning - which is due to expire at 11:00 GMT - is for icy patches on untreated roads.

    The second warning - until 23:55 GMT - is of further snow for much of Scotland.

    "Further delays to travel and public transport could occur, whilst some rural communities could become or remain cut off. Further impacts to power supplies/mobile phone coverage are also possible," the warning adds.

    The Environment Agency currently has 15 flood warnings in place - meaning immediate action is required. Of those, 11 are in Devon, Cornwall and elsewhere on the south coast, while four are in the North East. There are 36 less serious flood alerts active.

    Work has continued throughout the night to ferry staff and patients in and out of Torbay Hospital, in Devon, using 4x4 vehicles, BBC correspondent Simon Clemison has said.

    Main roads near the hospital are said to be clear, but issues remain with side roads.

    Volunteers have been helping transport people and the armed forces have also been assisting, our correspondent added.

    The UK is "counting the cost of extraordinary blizzards that have brought parts of the country to a standstill", according to the Guardian, external.

    It says: "Local authorities and the government, emergency services, transport companies, retailers, motorists and householders will face hefty bills to restore normality after the dramatic snowfall and gales."

  7. Storm prompts 'mutiny on trains'published at 03:35 Greenwich Mean Time 3 March 2018

    The Daily Telegraph, external says commuters in south-east London "took matters into their own hands" after their train was halted.

    It says they pressed an emergency door release and got out onto the tracks when their train was held outside the station.

    "As a result, all lines through Lewisham station were blocked," it said.

    "Southeastern Railway said the situation was getting worse 'because several people are jumping off trains onto the tracks', warning that it would only cause further delays.

    "Power was switched off on trains because of the incident and the police and fire service were brought in to help get people off trains."

    According to Western Power Distribution, external, which provides power to homes in the Midlands, south-west England and Wales, more than 4,700 properties still remain without power. More than 4,300 are in Devon and Cornwall.

    Following the disruption at Lewisham where passengers walked onto the tracks, every delayed Southeastern train is now moving.

    The Southeastern network was due to shut down, external at 21:30 GMT but the company says all the trapped trains will run to their final destinations.

    After several false starts when more people were discovered walking on the tracks, power has been restored to trains running through Lewisham.

    Southeastern Trains had to cut the electricity after passengers, frustrated at delays, left their trains and began walking on the line in that part of south London.

    Southeastern rail services have been disrupted after passengers grew frustrated at delays in south London, and began walking down the tracks.

    Trains in Lewisham were held up after someone pressed the emergency button and got off when their train was held outside the station.

    Several people then followed suit, prompting the police to be called for help.

    Southeastern said passengers could have been killed on the live tracks.

    Virgin Trains East Coast have said the Newcastle-to-Edinburgh route will be suspended for the rest of the day and on Saturday.

    CrossCountry Trains are also investigating whether fresh snowfall will stop their services between the two cities on Saturday.
