  6. Is everything rosy for Donald Trump and Theresa May?published at 19:08 British Summer Time 13 July 2018

President Trump burst out of the English sky as he had burst into British politics, the presidential helicopter and its terrifying support aircraft roaring down into the grounds of Chequers.

Once the clatter and the excitement had died down, the butterflies took to the air again, fluttering around twin podiums which were framed by six red, white and blue flags. Cattle lowed in the fields.

Into this scene - pastoral, if you didn't count the helicopters, the armed police, the secret service agents, the cables, the cameras, the lights and the journalists - stepped, it seemed, a couple in bliss.

Mr Trump held Mrs May's hand as they alighted in the Chequers garden and the tone was set.

He called her Theresa, she said "Donald and me", they smiled and laughed together. The cloud that had been cast by The Sun had lifted, it seemed.

Of course the truth is not so rosy. Mr Trump's brutal assessment of a Britain in turmoil cannot be wiped away by an afternoon of mutual flattery.

Significant difficulties and disagreements remain, not least on how to reach a post-Brexit trade deal, on the merits of a free press, and on immigration, where Mr Trump's rhetoric has been refreshingly robust or disturbingly racist, depending on your point of view.

Overall, the chaotic and confusing nature of Mr Trump's short trip to Nato and the UK has contributed to a suspicion that he cares little for his allies and less for preserving the multilateral institutions that have buttressed the liberal world order since the war.

The BBC's Frankie McCamley, who is at Turnberry, said the area has been "saturated" with security personnel, with police snipers crouched on three tiers of temporary scaffolding overlooking the golf course and other officers roaming the grounds.

Roads into the area have been blocked off with cars being stopped and thoroughly searched before entering, while officers are guarding the beach as a police boat carries out practice drills about a quarter of a mile out to sea.

Away from the village, the main road from Prestwick - where Airforce One is due to land - has been cleared of cars, with owners asked to park them elsewhere.

  11. The Wacky Races of news conferencespublished at 18:47 British Summer Time 13 July 2018

US President Donald Trump (L) and Britain"s Prime Minister Theresa May hold a joint press conference following their meeting at Chequers, the prime minister"s country residence, near Ellesborough, northwest of London on July 13, 2018 on the second day of Trump"s UK visit.Image source, Getty Images

To say it was a sub-optimal start to this US-UK news conference would be an understatement.

In fact, a huge British understatement. In fact, frankly ridiculous.

Overnight, Donald Trump had given an interview to the Sun newspaper in which, given the febrile state of UK politics, contained three utterly deadly quotes.

Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn has addressed an anti-Donald Trump protest in Trafalgar Square.

He said: "We are asserting our right to demonstrate, our right to free speech."

Mr Corbyn said Mayor of London Sadiq Khan deserves support for allowing a blimp of Mr Trump to be flown and not condemnation.

"Human rights belong to all of us," he added.

Mr Corbyn said the message of the demonstration was "one of solidarity". He added: "When we unite together with common objectives, we can all win."

The crowd applauded him warmly and chanted: "Oh, Jeremy Corbyn."

"Here comes the queen," says a British journalist in a quiet voice.

He's standing behind me on the lawn at Windsor Castle, and I look up and see a lovely woman in a wide-brimmed blue hat.

A moment later she smiles broadly at the president as if she really is happy to see him, and they walk together across the grass.

Standing nearby, the British journalists and I are intensely focused on the two people in front of us: the controversial president and the Queen.

While he walks across the lawn next to her, I watch in suspense to see if he'll reach out and touch her back or her arm - the way he usually does when he meets someone, but which would be a breach of royal protocol.

He's on his best behaviour, though. Seems as though he's going to leave England without offending the Queen or smashing any royal crockery.

Donald and Melania Trump have been taking tea with the Queen in Windsor Castle's Oak Room, where in 2016 she hosted tea for the then US president Barack Obama and his wife Michelle.

In 2008, when then US president George W. Bush had tea with the Queen at Windsor, he enjoyed a traditional English afternoon spread of tea, small sandwiches and cakes in the White Drawing Room.

Mr Trump did not bow as he shook hands briefly with the Queen when arrived at the castle, and Mrs Trump did not curtsy as she shook the head of state's white gloved hand.

The monarch smiled broadly and shared a few words with the Trumps before indicating they should stand either side of her for the military band's rendition of the American national anthem.
