Playful Prince Louis has been up to mischief again at the Jubilee - but his older relative Mike Tindall joked he was keeping an eye on the spirited four-year-old.

Prince Louis sat in the front row of the royal box with his parents the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and siblings Prince George and Princess Charlotte.

We've seen him covered his eyes and blow out his cheeks as he watched the carnival Pageant.

But former England rugby player Tindall, sitting in the row behind, gestured and pointed to his eyes that he was keeping watch over him, as Kate Middleton chuckled at their interaction.

Scores of celebrities riding in open-topped vehicles along the Mall... What could possibly go wrong?

Well, the car carrying Prue Leith needed to be pushed by four men in fluorescent jackets a little earlier after apparently rolling to a halt.

It didn't seem to dappen the spirits and the Bake Off judge continued to wave to the crowds.

Whizzing through the capital are fans of the Sinclair C5 - the idiosyncratic recumbent electric vehicles that briefly heralded the future of transport in the 1980s.

Mark Elliott, 49, a yachtmaster from Southampton, had always been an enthusiast for everything related to the decade, but the innovative nature of the C5 - which looks especially prescient in the modern era of electric vehicles - led him to snap up a vintage model for himself.

Soon his wife Anna was a convert too. "One day I said 'Can I have a go?' and then I got hooked," she says. "I wanted one as well so now we’ve got two."

For fans of a vehicle that was widely mocked on release, the inclusion in the pageant feels like a vindication.

"It's amazing to be part of the celebration with this aspect of the 1980s that almost got forgotten," says Mark.

One of the floats making its way through London is dedicated to Northern Soul - the 1970s dance movement that became hugely popular in the north of England and beyond.

"I was brought up with it because my dad used to go to the Wigan casino," says Alex Morison, 27, who works at the Barrow-in-Furness shipyard, describing the most famous Northern Soul venue of the movement’s heyday.

Most of his fellow dancers discovered the scene for themselves. And while the Northern Soul scene may be hugely important to its members, none of those taking part had expected to be invited to a royal event.

"I was sort of surprised they went with the youth culture aspect," says Harriet Dakin, 26, from Leeds.

In keeping with the free-wheeling spirit of Northern Soul, none of those heading to the float were in danger of over-preparing.

"We had a bit of a dance beforehand," says Alex. Harriet adds: “We don’t do choreography or anything like that."

    Edd China’s Outspan Orange car

Of all the classic vehicles taking part in the pageant, Edd China’s Outspan Orange car is possibly the most striking.

Designed to promote the citrus brand, it was one of six built during the late 1960s and early 1970s by Brian Waite Enterprises.

There is a tentative royal connection, says Edd, 51, a TV presenter and mechanic. Eric Walker, who owned the Outspan estate, was also the proprietor of the Treetops Estate in Kenya - where the Queen was staying in 1952 when she ascended to the throne on the death of her father.

By the time Edd got hold of the car, it was in a sorry condition. "We found a bird's nest in the engine," says Edd. "But we fixed the suspension, put a new windscreen in. It’s basically a Mini, we’ve done London to Brighton in it."
