Adrian Evans, the pageant master, has spent 18 months preparing for the event.

"There's this palpable sense that something enormous is about to happen," he says.

He admits he's been checking his weather forecasting apps this morning.

"But the weather will be what the weather will be," he says. "And it will be part of the character of the event. What else can you do?"

He hopes the public will enjoy the spectacle and that Queen herself will too.

"I imagine her on the sofa, having a cup of tea and I hope having a little bit of a giggle," he says.

As we've been reporting, act one's called For Queen and Country and will feature a large military parade with personnel from the UK's Armed Forces and from across the Commonwealth.

Organisers say there will be 1,750 people and 200 horses, making it one of the largest military spectacles in modern British history.

Earlier we mentioned seaside town Morecambe Bay and its attempt to break the world record for the biggest Jubilee Street Party.

A few hours ago that attempt looked to be in jeopardy as the heavens opened - but the rain has stopped and residents have started to take their seats.

The bunting is blowing in a blustery wind but thousands of people are still smiling in Morecambe, all tucking into their sandwiches and cake for this record breaking attempt.

They hope to break that today using 300 tables over an extra 100m.

Money from every ticket sold goes to charity.

Eric Morecambe, who’s statue is here, used to sing Bring Me Sunshine.

They're not confident of that today, but hope to make it to the record books.

Trisha Simon from Lancaster said: “It’s fabulous.

"We're all set - everything from beef sandwiches to Gala pie. We’ve even got rum punch."

Marie Riding, from Bolton Le Sands, added: "I'm confident we’ll break the world record.

"It won't matter if it rains - it feels like the sun always shines in Morecambe anyway."

It was a cheerful and informal cake-athon at the Oval for the Big Jubilee Lunch, visited earlier by Prince Charles and Camilla.

After all the famous faces at last night's concert, those getting the applause today were the grassroots heroes and heroines who support local community organisations and charities.

After the isolation felt by many during the pandemic, this jubilee event was about getting neighbours back together again.

Prince Charles and Camilla went round chatting to the guests, sitting at tables set out on the cricket pitch like a street party, with tea, sandwiches and a steel band playing.

There were two guests entirely covered in roses. It wasn’t clear why. Perhaps this was Paddington before the CGI effects.

The royal couple cut a cake and after they’d gone and the plates and bunting and everything was cleared away, the royal knife was still there on the table like a Cluedo clue.

And at least, on this famous cricket ground, rain didn't stop play.

As part of the parade Strictly Come Dancing judge Shirley Ballas will be riding on a bus representing the 1970s – a prospect she says she’s delighted by.

"I'm thrilled to be that they’ve put me on a 70s bus – I won’t take it personally," she laughs. "The '70s are my era. Some of the best music ever was made in the '70s.

"I'll be going up and down that bus cha-cha-cha-ing, waving to crowds and basically just getting everybody to really enjoy the celebrations.

It's an honour too, she says, to be part of a tribute to the Queen. "She's stoic, she's a mother, a grandmother, a great-grandmother. It's hard to change with the times and she’s done it beautifully."

This afternoon's huge pageant in central London tops off the four-day Platinum Jubilee weekend and is split into four parts, called 'acts':

    For Queen and Country

The pageant's opening act is a large military parade with personnel from the UK's Armed Forces and from across the Commonwealth.

Organisers say there will be 1,750 people and 200 horses, making it one of the largest military spectacles in modern British history.

    The Time of Our Lives

Act two is a through-the-ages celebration exploring seven decades of music, fashion, technology, trends, and culture from 1952 to 2022.

Celebrities from Ed Sheeran to Gary Lineker will be joining the procession and keep your eyes peeled for icons from different decades, including Daleks, James Bond cars and glove puppet fox Basil Brush.

    Let's Celebrate

A play made up of 12 chapters will tell the story of the Queen's 70-year reign in the pageant's third act.

Expect puppet Corgis, a Bollywood take on Princess Elizabeth's wedding and an Afro-Caribbean carnival-style interpretation of the Queen's 1953 coronation.

    Happy and Glorious

The final act is a grand musical finale taking place in front of Buckingham Palace.

The public around the palace will be invited to sing the national anthem and Ed Sheeran will lead a special tribute to the Queen.

  11. Street party food over the yearspublished at 13:38 British Summer Time 5 June 2022

People across the UK are holding Jubilee lunches and street parties on the last day of the celebrations.

Previous celebrations reflect the changing face and taste of the nation through history. So what were people likely to serve at street parties of yesteryear?

For the Queen's coronation in 1953, the most famous dish to come out was Poulet Reine Elizabeth, which became known as coronation chicken. The mixture of mayonnaise and curry showed the slowly widening palate of the British people.

By the late 1970s and the Silver Jubilee in 1977, packaged food had come to dominate the street party, and many tables featured the ultimate British party food: crisps in a bowl.

Whereas for the wedding of William and Kate in 2011, party tables were more likely to be laden with homemade brownies or hummus and couscous.

So what's likely to feature on this year's tables? Read our piece on the history of street party food to find out.

A service of "celebration and thanksgiving" has been held in Glasgow Cathedral to mark the Queen's 70 years on the throne.

Elsewhere people are gathering for a picnic in the gardens beneath Edinburgh Castle. The event is set to feature performances by the band of Her Majesty's Royal Marines Scotland and the local Love Music Community Choir.

The pageant in front of Buckingham Palace will be screened later.

Brittany Latimer, 33, is originally from North Carolina, in the US, but now lives in Italy, near Venice. She flew into London at 05:00 on Saturday, determined to soak up the atmosphere.

"I thought, when am I going to experience this again?" she says.

Coming from the States, she's struck by how different the occasion is from anything she ever experienced back home.

"To be able to follow a monarchy down through all these years - the US is like a baby country by comparison."

Next to Brittany at the barrier alongside the Mall is Karen Clout, 76, from Exmouth, Devon. Getting here was a struggle for Karen.

"I had set my alarm for 05:00 but when I woke up I didn’t feel 100% - I went to a party last night," she admits.

Karen adds: "My kids think I’m mad." But she was determined to be here, given that a 70-year-long reign is something anyone is unlikely to experience again for a long time.

"Even if William takes the throne it won’t last that long," she says.

A bit more now from the Prince of Wales after his visit to the Oval cricket ground in south London.

Prince Charles said he hoped "bickering" would not return after a feeling of "togetherness" across the nation over the Platinum Jubilee weekend.

He was speaking after mingling with guests at the Big Jubilee Lunch alongside the Duchess of Cornwall.

Sarah Friar, CEO of neighbourhood app Nextdoor, was among those to meet Prince Charles and he sat opposite her.

"He said at the end how great it was that everyone comes together this weekend," she said.

Sarah Friar, originally from Sion Mills in Co Tyrone, said Prince Charles commented: "When it comes to Monday are we going to go back to all the bickering again? Let's hope we don't do that."

Today's events round off four days of celebrations around the country. Ninety-seven-year-old Vera Green, has been joining in from the Prince George Care Home in Ipswich.

Her daughter, Linda Worsfold, sent us this photo and praised the staff at the care home, who she says are "wonderful". It's a reminder that lots of people have been working through the bank holidays, and helping others.

Linda says her mother remembers going to see the Queen's coronation in 1953 when she lived in Tooting in London.

Award-winning writer and magazine editor Tina Brown has spent decades chronicling the Royal Family.

She spoke to the BBC's Sophie Raworth a little earlier about her reaction to the last few days of celebrations including the Thanksgiving service at St Paul's Cathedral and the concert outside Buckingham Palace last night.

"I think it has gone brilliantly," she said. "The Sussexes have behaved themselves and stayed in their sort of allotted placement and didn’t overween anything.

"At the Thanksgiving [service] the main focus was [the Queen] wasn't there.

"I think there was a slight sense of unease among them.

"One does wonder how unwell the Queen is at the moment and one senses she found the preceding day absolutely exhausting."

  20. Seaside town pushing for world recordpublished at 12:26 British Summer Time 5 June 2022

    Morecambe

Surely only in Britain would the title of world's longest Jubilee street party be fought over.

The bragging rights are currently held by the Devon village of Combe Martin, which set the current record - 2,400m - at the Golden Jubilee in 2002.

Today, though, the Lancashire seaside town of Morecambe is going all out to smash that.

Five-hundred rented trestle tables have been set out along the vast and rather exposed promenade. Organisers say they should stretch 2,600m or more than 1.6 miles (2.6km).

They are expecting 5,000 people to turn out come rain or shine to tuck into a Jubilee lunch.

Tickets for the event have been sold for a £10 donation with the money raised going to charities supporting those affected by cancer and the war in Ukraine.

The forecast says conditions should be dry, if rather cool next to the Irish Sea.

As Eric Morecambe - the town's most famous son - put it, organisers are hoping the event will bring sunshine to your smile, and laughter all the while.
