Making the official Coronation quiche soon puts me in unfamiliar territory.

Not only does it take a bit of supermarket-trawling to find tarragon (a unique herb with an aniseed-like flavour). The recipe, external also requires me to swot up on "blind baking" - something I'll admit that I'd never even heard of before.

It quickly becomes clear that attention to the quality of the pastry is absolutely key. In and out of the fridge it goes, and in and out of the oven too.

Before long, I'm adding the filling and there's a dicey moment when this wobbly mix threatens to breach the top of the pastry crust.

    Thankfully, nightmare averted.

  2. Road-testing the official Coronation quichepublished at 15:44 British Summer Time 7 May 2023

Eggs, cheese, tarragon, broad beans, spinach, flour, cream, butter and milk.

We've been enjoying your pictures from the street parties taking place across the UK today, and the picnics you've put together for the Big Lunch event.

As we've mentioned, the official recipe of King Charles's Coronation is a quiche. Eggs, cheese and cream - how can you go wrong with a recipe based on those old favourites?

For the Big Lunch, I'm testing the official recipe: a quiche that was hand-picked by the King and Queen. It’s veggie, but for the inclusion of lard (which can be substituted for butter).

I'm following the recipe of royal chef Mark Flanagan - available on BBC Good Food here, external.

It certainly suits a herbivore like me. Since renouncing meat, I've been unable to enjoy one of my old favourites - coronation chicken.

But I'm not expecting this to be an easy test. I've never made a quiche before - and for reasons of humanitarian good, I try not to subject others to my cooking or baking wherever possible.

Yesterday he came to the Long Walk, and enjoyed the atmosphere “even in the rain”.

I’ve just spoken Sue Watson, 54, from Windsor who was one of the first members of the public Prince William and Catherine spoke to once they arrived.

Sue told me that they offered William a drink of their homemade 'Purple Reign' cocktail - it is made from gin, lemonade, Curaçao liquor and grenadine syrup.

She then offered him a cup.

“He opened the tap and took some out and tasted”, Sue tells me.

“He said it was very nice and offered some to Kate and she took some.”

Picnic blankets were abandoned as everyone surged to get a glimpse of the famous couple as they chatted away to people. There was lot of pushing and excitement.

The Prince and Princess of Wales mingled for about 45 minutes, stopping to take pictures with the delighted crowds, and even comforted one child who was overcome with emotion when meeting Kate.

Edinburgh’s annual interfaith event was moved to coincide with the Coronation.

She adds: “Every year so many people come along and every year it’s growing.

“The walk presents a safe space for people to come together and get to know each other.”

Crowds gathered at Leith’s Gurdwara to mark the Vaisakhi spring festival before joining the walk.

Wege Singh, the general secretary of the Leith Gudwara, says: “We’re very much in support of the Royal Family and all the work they’re doing, especially King Charles.

“He’s shown that he’s very, very in touch with the community so we’re looking forward to his reign.”

The royal walkabout is still ongoing in Windsor but elsewhere, events at the street party in Queens Road, Coventry are about to get under way.

Around 150 people are expected and organisers have promised “a right royal knees-up”.

Picnic tables and benches have been wheeled into place on the road and marquees have been set up in case of rain.

Board games such as Trivial Pursuit and Risk have been dug out of one resident’s cupboards and placed on one of the tables as someone fiddles with the sound on a karaoke system.

Quiches, cup cakes and jam and scones are coming out of Tupperware boxes and the smell of Jamaican food wafts through the air from a street food stall.

Chris Tse is helping out at the event says it’s great that the coronation is bringing people together:

“There’s definitely a big benefit," he tells me

"A chance to get to know each other as individual and a chance to grow as a network and build important relationships.”
