    Andy Tricklebank, a York resident says: "A photo of Skeldergate in central York this morning, just up the road from where I live. This is the worst I've ever seen it, even worse than 2002.

    "It's really weird in town, it's quieter because many roads are closed - it's just the emergency services and some people jogging.

    "My house is up a hill so I am dry and of course large sections of York are fine.

    "I can see the army, police and environment agency workers hard at it and hear a helicopter overhead."

    British Red Cross volunteers are staffing rest centres in Salford and Bury, and more than 50 people, mostly elderly residents, spent the night in the Bury shelter.

    Heavy rain has caused more flooding in northern England, with homes evacuated in Lancashire and Yorkshire, and rivers overflowing in Manchester and Leeds.

    Vulnerable people are being evacuated from 2,200 homes in York, where people in 3,500 properties near the River Foss have been advised to be ready to leave.

    Six severe flood warnings - indicating a danger to life - are in place.

  11. Minister: "Defences overwhelmed"published at 09:14

    Liz Truss, Environment Minister, said the situation across Lancashire and Yorkshire had been caused by "unprecedented levels of rain and high river levels".

    "We are still in a situation with major flood warnings and we are still working to protect properties and lives."

  13. Overwhelming levels on rivers Foss and Ousepublished at 09:00

    Emergency services tackling "unprecedented levels of flooding", according to City of York Council after "overwhelming river levels" for the Foss and Ouse.

    Soldiers have been deployed in the city and road closures include the A59 between the A1 and York and the A19 Fulford Road.

    • Met Office, external warnings of further rainfall are in place for northern England, Scotland and Wales
    • Hundreds of flood alerts and warnings, external have been issued - more than 30 of them severe
    • Electricity North West, external has warned power may not be restored to some homes until Monday. There are 8,100 properties still without power across north-west England

    Electricity North West is warning that there will be some homes without power until Monday.

    The company says there are 9,500 properties without power across the north-west of England.

    Flood defences at a number of electricity substations have been breached and engineers are "working round the clock" to restore power, a statement says.

    The company is sending food vans to a number of locations on Sunday morning to provide hot food to customers without power. Vans are scheduled to visit Radcliffe, Padiham and Rochdale.

  18. Search and rescue teams and Army in Yorkpublished at 22:37

    Search and rescue teams and the Army have joined the flooding operation in the centre of York.

    Charlie Croft, of City of York Council, said they were "in uncharted territory" after the River Foss pumping station failed and the Foss barrier had to be opened.

    Thirteen roads in York have been closed after the River Foss broke its banks. York council has set up a rest centre at the Archbishop Holgate School for people who may be affected by flooding.

  20. Yorkshire weather warning downgradedpublished at 22:10

    The Met Office red warning for severe weather in North and West Yorkshire has been replaced with an amber "be prepared" warning. An estimated 60mm (2.4in) to 120mm (5in) of rain has fallen across the region during the day.
