I think that the "issue" now seems to be less about safety and more about who is to blame. Enough is enough - get back to work.

    Chris Smith, Polegate

I travel to and from work every day from Shoreham to Worthing and whereas it is not as bad for me as those poor people travelling longer distances the frustration is that nobody responsible seems to care at all, not the Union, Government or Southern that this situation has continued for so long. Penalties should be imposed on Southern – then they would care. I assume this situation is going to continue until the end of the franchise so end it now and do everyone a big favour.

Here's what commuters at London Bridge station had to say this morning.

  19. ‘We greatly regret the industrial action we have taken...'published at 13:20 Greenwich Mean Time 10 January 2017

Mick Whelan, the general secretary of the Aslef union, whose members are taking strike action on the Southern network today, has released this statement.

    Quote Message

We greatly regret the industrial action we have taken on Southern Railways today. We don’t want to inconvenience passengers, nor do our members want to lose money, because we want to help build a better railway for Britain. But we have been forced to go on strike by an intransigent management that has not been prepared to negotiate with us.

    Quote Message

Southern are bullies. Throughout this dispute, from when they first announced their intentions ten months ago, they have tried to force through changes in the terms and conditions of staff by tearing up agreements rather than by negotiating.

    Quote Message

In contrast, we stick to deals we have made and have always been willing to negotiate when someone shows goodwill; that is how we managed to strike a deal last year with ScotRail which works well for the company, the passengers and the staff. So it can be done!

    Quote Message

‘We still hope that Southern will see sense and sit down with us and talk about how we can move forward in a way which works for passengers, for staff, and, yes, for the company, too. Our door is, and has always been, open.

    Quote Message

It’s now up to the company, and the government, to be flexible and to end the misery of commuters. The ball is in their court.

Mick Whelan, General secretary, Aslef union
