    A 14-year-old boy is in hospital today with "life-threatening" injuries after being knocked down by a car at the weekend.

    The teenage pedestrian was knocked down by a Ford Focus on Oldgate Lane, Thrybergh, Rotherham, on Saturday.

    The car involved was thought to have been travelling towards Dalton at the time and the driver was not injured in the crash.

    Police have appealed for any witnesses to contact them.

    An elderly woman is recovering after a hit-and-run in Honley, near Huddersfield.

    The 82-year-old was crossing Westgate at about 13:30 on Friday when she was hit by a Vauxhall Astra.

    The car then drove off towards the roundabout at Moor Bottom.

    The woman was treated at Huddersfield Royal Infirmary and is now recovering at home.

    The moment when City of York Council tried to silence one of its citizens has won it a very dubious national honour, external.

    National satirical magazine Private Eye runs a "Rotten Boroughs" column, investigating wrongdoing in councils across the country.  

    In its latest issue the column has dished out awards for the most glaring examples of "municipal mediocrity and worse" in 2016. And City of York Council receives the Airbrushing History Award.

  5. Fly-tipping in Barnsley after tougher rules introduced at waste disposal centrespublished at 10:58 Greenwich Mean Time 16 January 2017

    Just a week after Barnsley Council introduced some tough new rules at their recycling centres, the town has been hit by some horrendous cases of fly-tipping.

    A residents only permit scheme has been brought in at Barnsley's four household waste recycling centres.

    Reduced hours at tips in Sheffield, Doncaster and Rotherham had meant people were travelling to Barnsley to leave rubbish there. 

    As a result, people visiting the tip are being issued with a car window sticker when they show photo ID along with a valid vehicle registration document proving they live in Barnsley.

    A pub which has been gutted by fire in Castleford is being treated as an arson attack.

    The Picture House was set on fire at about 04:50 yesterday.

    The pub was extensively damaged by the fire which detectives and fire service investigators think was started deliberately. 

    No-one was injured in the incident.

    More than £7m will be spent on pothole repairs in Yorkshire and the Humber in the coming financial year.

    Councils across the region estimate they'll fill in more than 130,000 - costing about £50 a time.

    CCTV images of two men who are wanted by police have been released following a robbery in Leeds.

    More than £7,000 has been raised by people opposed to plans to create a visitor centre at one of York's most recognisable landmarks. 

    English Heritage has been given the go-ahead for the project at Clifford's Tower by City of York Council.

    However, Independent councillor Johnny Hayes is seeking a judicial review and recently set up a crowdfunding page to raise £7,500 to pay for legal costs. 

    He'll find out in the next few weeks if it's been granted and he's been explaining his objections to the plans:

    A couple of problems are being reported on the A64 in North Yorkshire at the moment:

    • There's very slow traffic on the A64 Scarborough Road in both directions in Rillington at the Low Moorgate junction due to roadworks
    • The A64 Seamer Road in Scarborough is currently busy but moving in both directions between the Hinderwell Road junction and the Barry's Lane junction due to roadworks

    A South Yorkshire MP says she's worried the standard of care at a Sheffield care home could drop as a result of changes to the way it's funded.

    The Sheffield Health and Social Care Trust, the current care provider at the the Birch Avenue Home in Chapeltown, says it can no longer afford to run it.

    Angela Smith, Labour MP for Penistone and Stocksbridge, fears a new provider will try to maintain levels of care at the home with a similar budget - a budget which has been shown to be unsustainable.

    The tender process for a new provider starts today.

    Rotherham United manager Paul Warne says he will look to move on quickly, after confirming striker Peter Odemwingie will leave the club.

    Odemwingie failed to score in seven appearances for the Millers, after signing a short term deal in October.

    The money freed-up by the Nigerian's departure will be added to the club's transfer fund this month, according to Warne, who's also hopeful a potential new signing will undergo a medical today.

    Owners of independent businesses next to Leeds Indoor Market claim they've been "let down" by the council over plans to redevelop the area. 

    They've been told they have until September to leave George Street, opposite the new Victoria Gate shopping centre. 

    It's understood planning permission will be submitted to revamp the stretch of shops into bars and restaurants, creating a link between the shopping centre and Kirkgate Market.

    A Sheffield care home has an uncertain future this morning after the care provider said it was pulling out of its contract. 

    The home in question is Birch Avenue Home in the Chapeltown area of the city.

    Staff are paid by the Sheffield Health and Social Care trust - who now say they can't afford the home.

    The crowdfunded funeral of a well-known Yorkshire Big Issue seller is due to take place later.

    Peter Toulson, who died in November, sold the magazine from a pitch outside a department store in York's Parliament Street before his death.

    A friend of Mr Toulson started a fundraising page to help his partner Karen pay for his funeral costs.

    The appeal exceeded its £3,000 target just a few days after being launched - eventually reaching more than £5,000.
