  2. Woman questioned after man's death in Gomersalpublished at 08:37 Greenwich Mean Time 16 January 2017

    Detectives are continuing to question a woman following the death of a man in Gomersal.

    The 43-year-old man had been attacked at an address in Shirley Terrace on Friday 13 January and was pronounced dead at the scene.

    A 47-year-old woman remains in police custody.

    A 26-year-old man arrested earlier has now been released on bail,  

    Police were yesterday given a 36-hour extension to continue questioning the woman.

  4. Traffic and travel: Heavy traffic on South Yorkshire's motorwayspublished at 08:20

    If you're heading out into South Yorkshire this morning, be aware of a couple of pinch points on the motorway network just now:

    • Heavy traffic's currently reported on the M1 northbound between J32, M18 (Thurcroft) and J33, A630 (Catcliffe)  
    • And there's also heavy traffic on the M18 northbound between J2 A1(M) and J3, A6182 (St Catherines)

    South Yorkshire fire crews have issued advice on using and charging e-cigarettes after being called to a fire caused by one of the devices.

    Two fire crews were called to a fire at a home on Roebuck Chase in Manvers, Rotherham last Wednesday.

    When crews arrived they found a small fire in the lounge area which was due to an e-cigarette on charge.

    Firefighters quickly extinguished the fire and no-one was injured in the incident.

    Trevor Bernard, head of community safety at South Yorkshire Fire Service, says fires caused by e-cigarettes are an emerging trend which a few years ago simply did not exist:

    A North Yorkshire woman's campaigning to resolve "bed-blocking" issues after her husband spent three months in hospital. 

    Martin Lister, from Scarborough, was due to be discharged after 10 days - but couldn't get a place in a care home. 

    Margaret Lister's campaign comes as the latest figures from NHS England show bed-blocking is getting worse because of delays in discharging patients from hospital. 

    Mrs Lister says the family has finally found somewhere outside Scarborough which can cater for her husband's needs: 

  9. OAP seriously injured in Sheffield collisionpublished at 07:30 Greenwich Mean Time 16 January 2017

    An 89-year-old man has suffered serious injuries after a collision with a car in South Yorkshire.

    At about 12:15 yesterday, a blue Vauxhall Astra was involved in a collision with a pedestrian in Boston Street, Sheffield, near to the junction with Cemetery Road.

    The pedestrian suffered life-threatening injuries and was taken to hospital.

    A 40-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of being over the prescribed limit and being unfit to drive due to drugs.

  10. Paint spill in West Yorkshire watercoursespublished at 07:21 Greenwich Mean Time 16 January 2017

    White paint which was spilt in a motorway crash has polluted watercourses in West Yorkshire.

    About 12,000 litres pooled on to the carriageway following an HGV crash on the M606 in Bradford on Friday.

    The Environment Agency said "no significant impacts" had been reported and becks around the motorway were "running clear".

    It added: "Some of the pollutant is being washed through the system and can be seen in the [River] Calder."

    Breaking

    Highways England are reporting problems on the westbound M62.

    They say two lanes are closed between junction 27 at Gildersome and junction 26 at Chain Bar.

    It's as a result of an accident.

    The event is expected to clear between 08:15 and 08:30.

    The inquests into the deaths of 30 British tourists, including two from West Yorkshire, who were killed at a Tunisian resort in June 2015 are due to open later.

    Islamist gunman Seifeddine Rezgui opened fire on holidaymakers on the beach near Sousse, killing 38 in total.

    The victims included Christopher and Sharon Bell, from Killingbeck in Leeds.

    The terror attack remains the deadliest on Britons since the 7 July London bombings in 2005.

    On the rails, there are no major issues reported so far this morning at Yorkshire's main stations.

    The main problem so far is at Sheffield where the 06:33 Newcastle via Doncaster service is running about 15 minutes late and is now due at about 06:48.
