    Too many children aren't "socially mobile" enough in Bradford and Doncaster, according to the government.

    It's now including both areas in a programme of support to increase life opportunities.

    Education Secretary Justine Greening reckons that improving opportunities for schoolchildren from disadvantaged backgrounds will help Britain succeed once it has quit the EU.

  2. Black and ethnic women's charity remains open thanks to cash injectionpublished at 12:53 Greenwich Mean Time 18 January 2017

    A women's charity in Rotherham has been saved from closure.   

    Apna Haq works with black and ethnic minority women and girls who're facing or are at risk of sexual abuse and violence. 

    Rotherham council had cut its funding to the charity. 

    But they've now secured £500,000 from the National Lottery which will keep it open for three years.

    Plans for a multi-million pound redevelopment of York's Castle Museum have been revealed.

    Proposals include a new link building between the two former prison buildings which house the museum.  

    The York Museums Trust, which runs the site, says it would also like to create a second entrance.

    The trust says it wants to transform the area for visitors which could include a new riverside walk.  It also says it'll apply to the Heritage Lottery Fund for financial support for the project.

    Police say a recent attack on a woman is causing understandable concern for people living near Denaby Craggs in Doncaster.

    They're pledging extra patrols in the area involving police horses and dogs as a way of reassuring the public.

    In the incident a 29-year-old woman suffered head injuries, external when she was attacked by a man who had his face covered.

    West Yorkshire Police say they received a call about a " suspicious package" at 08:39 this morning. 

    Officers say the cordon and road closures have now been lifted and that the scene is undergoing forensic examination and inquiries are continuing.

    An incident which closed roads and a shopping centre in Leeds appears to have been resolved.

    The song 'You Can Leave Your Hat On' from the Full Monty film has been given a cheeky twist.

    In an effort to get more people to quit smoking a range of workers have been doing their own version of the song to promote nicotine patches.

    It's part of a campaign from the city council.

    A teenager from Batley who went missing in the early hours of this morning has been found.

    Police have thanked members of the public for their help in finding 15-year-old Kasie Fawcett.

    After a big hole appeared in a city centre store's car park in Sheffield efforts continue to prevent any flooding problems.

    The hole appeared near the Decathlon store on Monday.

    This video from Network Rail is shocking and unbelievable. Two adults not only risked their own lives but that of a toddler as well.

    You'll see them climbing over a locked level crossing gate at Seamer station near Scarborough. It happened on New Year's Eve.   

    Not happy with doing it once, they then risk all their lives again:

    Network Rail and British Transport Police are warning people of the dangers if level crossings are not used properly.

    This was the second incident in Yorkshire over the last few weeks.

    Three weeks ago, CCTV footage showed how a man pushing a bicycle was almost killed by a train at Ducketts level crossing in Pudsey, Leeds.

    A 26-year-old woman has been arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender in connection with the death of a 16-year-old girl in Dinnington, near Rotherham.

    The girl, named locally as Leonne Weeks, was found dead on a path on Monday morning near Lordens Hill in Dinnington.
