  2. Wheelchair vs buggy case: Leeds man wins partial Supreme Court victorypublished at 10:20 Greenwich Mean Time 18 January 2017

More on the news that a Leeds man has won a partial victory at the Supreme Court meaning people who are disabled and use buses can gain priority use of wheelchair spaces on buses.

Supreme Court president Lord Neuburger has allowed Wetherby man Doug Paulley's appeal, but only to the limited extent that operator First Group's policy requiring a driver to simply ask a non-wheelchair user to vacate the space without taking any further steps was unjustified.

Where a driver who's made such a request concludes such a refusal is unreasonable, he or she should consider some further step to pressurise the non-wheelchair user to vacate the space, depending on the circumstances, Lord Neuburger added.

  3. Wheelchair vs buggy bus case: Firm's policy breached Equality Actpublished at 10:11 Greenwich Mean Time 18 January 2017

People who are disabled and use buses have won a partial victory at the Supreme Court, meaning they gain priority use of wheelchair spaces on buses.

    Doug Paulley

The case was triggered when wheelchair user Doug Paulley, from Wetherby, Leeds, attempted to board a bus operated by First Group which had a sign saying: "Please give up this space if needed for a wheelchair user".

Mr Paulley was left at the stop because a woman with a sleeping baby in a pushchair refused to move out of the designated area when asked by the bus driver.

Mr Paulley won an initial case against First Group, declaring its policy of "requesting, not requiring" able-bodied passengers to move to be unlawful disability discrimination, but First Group appealed successfully to the Court of Appeal in 2014.

The Supreme Court has now allowed Mr Paulley's appeal, but only to the limited extent that the firm's policy requires a driver to simply request a non-wheelchair user to vacate the space without taking any further steps is unjustified.

Mr Minichiello (pictured above with Jessica Ennis-Hill) wants the authorities to tighten up the testing of footballers.

He says athletes like Jessica Ennis-Hill are tested between 12-15 times a year, but on average footballers are tested just once over the same period.

    Quote Message

Let's say a club has 30 players, that's only about two players a month being tested. The testing programme doesn't go on for 12 months according to the Football Association, so it would take you more than a year to test everybody at least once at the club."
