  1. Candles to mark Holocaust Memorial Day at York Minsterpublished at 11:35 Greenwich Mean Time 20 January 2017

    A date for your diary: York Minster's historic Chapter House will be the setting for the cathedral's annual lighting of candles to mark Holocaust Memorial Day on Thursday, 26 January.

    I've been to this poignant event before, which brings together people from all walks of life in this silent commemoration.

    This year's theme is "How can life go on?".

    The cathedral's commemoration will start with a dedicated Evensong service followed by a procession to the Chapter House for the lighting of 600 candles set out to form the Star of David.     

    York Minster's commemoration is one of a series of events taking place across York for Holocaust Memorial Week.

  2. Man bailed over Leeds sexual assaultpublished at 11:12 Greenwich Mean Time 20 January 2017

    A 72-year-old man arrested in connection with a sexual assault on an 11-year-old girl in Rothwell, Leeds, has been released on bail.

    The man was arrested on Wednesday night following the incident which happened on Commercial Street last Thursday. 

    Police are continuing their inquiries.

  6. An expensive mistake: Anglers fined for fishing illegally in North Yorkshirepublished at 10:41 Greenwich Mean Time 20 January 2017

    Three anglers who were caught without licences on a North Yorkshire river have been fined a total of nearly £900.

    A licence would have cost each of them just £27.

    North Yorkshire Police's Rural Taskforce worked with the enforcement team at the Angling Trust to catch the culprits. The teams were acting on a tip-off. 

    Anglers are being warned to make sure they have the right rod licence before they set out to fish.

    Seventeen of his Linocut Prints have been loaned to the town's Cooper Gallery from The British Museum.

    Only Barnsley, Liverpool and Coventry have been given the honour of hosting the touring exhibition.

    West Yorkshire Police say they're urgently appealing for information to find the 14-year-old who didn't come home last night. 

    She was reported missing after visiting the Ravensthorpe area of Dewsbury.

    Jennifer is a Hungarian national. She was wearing a blue denim jumpsuit, a black leather jacket and black leather ankle boots with a perspex heel.

    The search for a little girl in South Yorkshire is finally over. Don't worry, she hadn't gone missing or anything like that - but when she sent a mystery letter to a Sheffield Uni boffin, he wanted to find out more.

    She sent the letter to Professor Tim Birkhead, who was keen to help her after she fired off a string of questions to him as part of a school challenge.

    The only problem was that she'd forgotten to include a return address...

    Professor Brian Cox shared news of the search, and BBC Radio Sheffield has now revealed the quizzical letter-writer was none other than eight-year-old Aisha Ahmed.

    Aisha's identity was finally revealed after her teacher saw a post about the mystery letter on BBC Radio Sheffield's Facebook page.

    Two families who were forced out of their homes by a sinkhole in Ripon have been told they'll have to wait another month before they can return.

    The families have been in temporary accommodation since the 66ft by 33ft hole, about 30ft deep, appeared in Magdalen's Road on 9 November.

    Engineers have filled the hole and sewers have been repaired . Work is ongoing with landscaping and putting up new fences.

    Scarborough's roadworks are causing delays again this morning, as they have been all week.

    The A64 Seamer Road in the town is currently reported to be very busy but moving in both directions near the B1427 Queen Margaret's Road junction.

    After launching its latest anti-litter effort, external earlier this month, Selby District Council is giving a visual "pat on the back" to those who've been supporting the idea.

    It's simple enough: people are encouraged to pick up just one piece of litter they see and bin it.

    Already, snaps of people doing just that have been coming in, and the council hopes the simplicity of the scheme will pay off for the whole community.

    The number of tourists coming to Yorkshire is on the up, new figures show.

    There was a 12% increase in visits and a 21% increase in overnight stays in the three months between July and September last year compared with the same period in 2015, according to Visit Britain.  

    The amount of money tourists spent in Yorkshire also rose significantly last summer - with tourism bringing in £194m to the region's economy.

    Money for 21 school crossing wardens in Rotherham is being pulled by the council.

    The authority says it's had to identify the safest school crossing sites and ask those schools to pay for a crossing warden themselves. 

    Out of 21 schools identified, nine have agreed to find the money - but at three schools, including Dinnington and Anston Park Juniors, the crossing wardens have been given their notice.
