    A woman from Leeds is urging others to have regular smear tests after being diagnosed with incurable cervical cancer. 

    Liz Wilkins, 30, from Garforth is now undergoing chemo after a 9cm tumour was found in her cervix.

    It's a special day today for Yorkshire-born Bafta award-winning screenwriter Sally Wainwright.

    She's being honoured by the University of York today as they give her an honorary degree.  

    Sally's best known for the BBC TV dramas Happy Valley and Last Tango in Halifax which are both set in Yorkshire.   

    She studied English at the university before getting her big break writing for The Archers on BBC Radio 4.

    South Yorkshire's Police and Crime Commissioner says if he doesn't put up the tax which pays for the force then he'll have to cut 30 police officers.

    He's asking for people's views on whether to increase the police precept in your council tax by over 3% for the next financial year. 

    Along with West Yorkshire, the county is one of 10 police authorities in England that's allowed to put up the tax above 25% because historically people have paid less than those in other areas.

    It works out at £5 extra per year - 10p a week - for a Band D property.

    Things are looking very quiet on Yorkshire's roads so far this morning. 

    However, there are currently a couple of pinch-points being reported in West Yorkshire just now:

    • There's heavy traffic on the A644 Wakefield Road eastbound in Cooper Bridge, Mirfield at the Cooper Bridge Roundabout
    • It's also getting very busy on the A6177 Rooley Lane in both directions in Bradford at the Dudley Hill Roundabout
    • And the traffic's building up on A657 New Line in both directions in Greengates, Bradford, at the A658 Harrogate Road junction
  9. Search is on for HS2 train builderpublished at 07:06 Greenwich Mean Time 20 January 2017

    The search for a company to take on the £2.75bn contract to build high speed trains for the HS2 rail network is under way.

    The Department for Transport says up to 60 trains capable of speeds of about 225mph are needed.

    The trains are for the first phase of the project, due to open in 2026 and run between London and Birmingham, with a second phase due to run between London and Leeds via Sheffield and extending towards York.

    Today's launch comes ahead of a formal start of the process in spring 2017, when companies interested in bidding can learn more about the process. Formal invitations to tender will be made in 2018.

    There were problems with rail services overnight on the York-Newcastle route due to issues with the overhead wires at Northallerton.
