  20. Early morning tree-felling to go ahead in Sheffieldpublished at 10:26 Greenwich Mean Time 30 November 2017

Work to cut down trees in Sheffield as part of the city council's tree replacement programme will now begin before 07:00, despite one councillor saying last year that this wouldn't happen, it's emerged.

    Fallen tree

That initial statement, by Bryan Lodge, Sheffield City Council's cabinet member for the environment, was made to BBC Radio Sheffield in 2016 in the light of protests against the scheme on Rustlings Road.

But the authority now says contractors Amey will cut down trees from dawn "in the light of continued protests" and because the council says it's the best way to ensure work is carried out in the "safest way possible".

The work will cause "minimal disruption" to nearby residents and chainsaws won't be switched on before 07:00, the council adds.

The programme is part of Streets Ahead, an ongoing £2bn Sheffield City Council project which the authority says will improve roads and footpaths in the city, with about 5,500 trees being cut down since 2012.

The council insists those trees earmarked are either “dangerous, dead, diseased, dying, damaging or discriminatory" and that each tree removed will be replaced on a one-for-one basis, with 600 additional trees planted during the period of the contract.

However, campaigners claim many of the trees classed as “damaging” or “discriminatory” are healthy specimens which should not be cut down.
